np: the fury of humanity

tate

these things you just don't consider
when you feel like you're changing
taking on something to make us better
where something adds, something takes.
and Tate in the afternoon, shining,
the hope, the love of aeons
the subtle, banking turn against
the New York skyline bold -
these things you just don't consider
everyday you could sense it
live your life for it
and leave here knowing nothing but it.

james and michael and lizzy were visiting the modern art museum here tuesday afternoon. i was asleep on the couch in our flat after gorging myself on cheese and mushroom pasta and having taken in the first chapter of the new book i'm reading, a heartbreaking work of staggering genius. the night before i woke up talking in my sleep. james said i had yelled out 'fuck you!' and woke him up. i remember waking up talking, but not what i had said. it was james' twenty-first birthday proper. it was two in the afternoon london time.

and everything changed.

i shook. i actually closed my eyes and prayed to that god that i've been spending my moments discovering over the past three years. i walked into the friends' center this morning, reading the signs spread out all over the place. 'in human diversity, is the creativity of god.' so much lost. so many people.

london was mad. streets were quiet. everyone went home early. canary warf (the banking district) was abandoned and evacuated. like so many oklahoma shacks and farms given up to the dust storms during the depression. a cloud of grey ash, the remnants of a central part of fifty-thousand peoples' lives. come tearing down the street. come burying everything in its path. so they would think, burying america.

i'm not here to sound patriotic. i'm not here to talk about the individuals who chose to infringe on the given rights of every human to live their life. the way i'm sure they think we've done the same to them.

i'm just here to be human.

if only everyone would just be that way. i wouldn't have to be typing this.

truth is upon us. and it is one scary beast.

god help us all.
