Saturday, September 01, 2001 np: i'm cheeky me... thursday night brought us out for our first pub experience. although it was kind of trendy upscale thing, drinks were kind of cheap (or at least, not as expensive as others places) and therefore, alright. we had a good night. last night was ridiculous. we opted to go to this industrial/metal dance club called the "electric ballroom" over somewhere in camden town. you get this idea that foreigners are so much cooler than we are. that they have infinitely better taste. especially the brits. i mean, look at the music they've put out over the years: the sex pistols, the clash, the beatles, gary numan! the possibilites are limitless really. but you get into one of these places and the line out the door is filled with kids i thought i left back in high school. slipknot shirts. fear factory, marilyn manson, etc. it was..just odd. i thought at least there would be some sort of underground something or other. but no. although one guy did give me the thumbs up and a high five for my joy division shirt. that was nice. so we left the club a little after 2 a.m. and had the following two questions asked of me: "Taxi?" (taxi drivers out prowling for fares from the club) "Ganja?" (i'll let that one explain itself.) so we began (albeit it a bit tipsy) to understand the workings of the london night bus system. see, after the tube (subway) shuts down at about 11:30, the night buses start rolling in its stead. we took a bus to trafalgar square where a lot of the night buses come together and you can catch one to virtually anywhere you need to go. next, james and michael went off to find a place to urinate and in lizzy and my's attempts to stay warm, inadvertently lost them. thus the great night race began. we waited for about twenty to twenty-five minutes to find them before giving up and grabbing the next night bus to marble arch. we worried about what had happened to them. we were thinking arrest for public urination. but when we arrive back at our flat (at nearly 3:30am) they had just gotten there before us. they had walked the near four miles from trafalgar square to marble arch. and beat us. amazing, really. this morning we took a boat out on the river thames for a tour of the river. we saw the houses of parliament, big ben, london bridge, tower bridge, london eye, etc. all the things you should see. the houses of parliament are absolutely beautiful. so's the clock tower..st. stephens i believe it's called. london is a nice city. and i think i'm really going to like it here. but come december..i'm definitely coming home to something far better than any city in the world could ever offer. blub blub. posted by J.
