np: you just get overwhelmed...

an amazing week in london. i don't know where to begin with all i've seen or heard. dig this: i visited westminster abbey and the people who are buried there..this is what amazed me. people you read about in books. and read their poetry, listen to their music, watch their comets, talk like characters out of a fiction novel. when there's a plaquard in front of you..a tomb..something. it all comes alive.

and then you go to a club..and the beer is cheap (and good) and the dj is wearing a stephen malkmus shirt and a girl standing next to the dj booth compliments you on your sleater-kinney shirt and they play yo la tengo and then you dance (dance!) to the pixies (the pixies!!) specifically "where is my mind?" ("where is my mind?"!!!) and it's just amazing.

then you go see dialated peoples at the university of london. your first hip-hop show ever. and you're blown away. one of the most amazing performances you've ever seen. so full of soul, love, energy, the type of stuff that turns aeroplanes around and makes people put down their guns/knives/hatred and say: i believe that everyone has direct and immediate access to god, i believe in integrity, i believe in simplicity, i believe in equality and i believe in peace. and then we all dance (dance!) to the pixies (the pixies!!) and it's fine. everyone lives. the end.

but then you go to the globe. and though you've never read king lear you get really excited. you're always excited to see/read shakespeare plays you haven't heard the storyline of before cos it's all new to you! so you go..and it's amazing. you stand..for three and a half hours..watching this play going on before you. in this re-built theatre, with nearly a thousand people with you who are all there to see the two hours trappings of that stage. (i know..two hours, three and a half..but it's an allusion people, jeez!) and you love it. it's brilliant. it's smashing.

and sunday you're going to see gary numan. and the friday after that, the incomparable josh rouse.

and you're living in london. and it's incredible.

but people are dying. and you have this receipt from an atm about two blocks from your flat. the date is eleventh of september at about two p.m. london time, which is about nine a.m. eastern standard. and you know that while you were withdrawing money, money you spent on that rare gary numan "are 'friends' electric?" original pressing single from nineteen and seventy-nine, on that only ones album cos you'd never heard the original version of "another girl, another planet" and that live joy division album on mauve vinyl, the matching show to the other live one you'd purchased on cd one of those last american summer days, while you were doing that...

people were dying.

what do you say to that?
