Saturday, October 27, 2001 np: opera, ludwig van, the man who wasn't there.. i saw the new coen brothers film this evening. the man who wasn't there. it was quite good, as their work tends to be. i haven't seen a film that they've done that i didn't like. i'm in awe of their stylistic diversity. the various ways of filming that they've taken on. the differences are amazing. there are pieces of music that have very distinct connections to things in your past. things that move you in ways you can't explain. like the opera piece that andy dufresne (tim robbins) plays over the prison intercom system in the shawshank redemption. my love for that movie knows no bounds so the music in it is very much impressed upon my memory. (having seen the movie going on fifteen times doesn't hurt either.) the opera piece that is played is used in the film i saw tonight. i recognized it immediately. if you know the scene from shawshank that i'm talking about, it invokes this feeling of hope and peace and transcendence. that's what i always think of. there's also this beethoven piece that plays a central role in the man who wasn't there. it's beautiful and really stays with you long after you step away. or at least, that's how i am. i'm reading my last post. oi, the evils of the drink. i should write tipsy more often. or not. at a club last night they played pulp's "common people." i was waiting and waiting for a dj somewhere to play that so i could dance to it. and it was every bit as magnificent as i had hoped. i love pulp. and i'm seeing them in november at the brixton academy. eight days before i leave to return to america. quite a goodbye. things're kinda running together. i had this week off from internship (it's half-term here for schools, i.e. fall break) and didn't do that much. not as much as i'd hoped. i get to missing brynn more and more. and feeling depressed even though i'm in this beautiful city that i am so totally in love with and wouldn't mind staying another semester if i didn't miss her so much. she's coming to visit at thanksgiving. a brief repose in a season of being in love from across an ocean. it was quite a way to kick off a two year period where we won't be seeing eachother consistently except for maybe..and then only maybe..three months out of the year. you know how it feels to go a long time without having someone who really understands you? like not having a best friend. like having friends, but not people you can talk to. whom you feel understand you at a glance, not at a great diatribe. just with your eyes. or a few words. that's where i am. brynn's my best friend. and talking to her just isn't the same as being with her. -------- she's out shopping for warmer clothes the cold chicago air is poison to the bones the brittle nature of humans as they are. london is unseasonably warm. maybe. this world is not my home. i'm just passin' through. so trends in weather, the currents and the such are not my territory. i have this pea coat i'm rather fond of. the large buttons remind me of the great lengths i go to sew myself up sometimes. and my multi-coloured toboggan snug over my freshly shorn head. i guess i needed a jacket without hair to hide behind. oversized jackets, trousers and sweaters. anything to drown me in fabric and warmth and the safety in not showing your hands. in not letting them know just how painfully thin you really, truly are. posted by J.
