Saturday, December 01, 2001 np: the trees, those useless trees, produce the air that i am breathing.. so, there's one week to go until i leave here. and my ultimate reason (people might think i'm joking when i say this, but i really believe it somewhere) for coming finally occurred last night. i saw pulp live. and it was everything i had ever thought it might be and more. jarvis cocker (as time out so eloquently put it this week) is england's greatest pop star. he is every essence the performer when he's on stage. but unlike other people who are that way and you really can't believe that they're anything but arrogant assholes for it (read: U2), you can just feel that everyone in pulp is really down to earth and just making great music the way they enjoy doing. putting on a good show, all the dancing and posing and squealing that is included, is just part of the fun. the two stunners of the night were unbelievably explosive versions of "f.e.e.l.i.n.g.c.a.l.l.e.d.l.o.v.e." and "this is hardcore." the latter, especially, was everything its sleazy-sexyness promised. you are hardcore/you make me hard/you name the drama/and i'll play the part/it seems i saw you in some teenage wetdream/i like your get-up, if you know what i mean the closer (the second-encore closer, that is) was an update on their classic, brit-anthem "common people." there is nothing in the world more uplifting than hearing three-thousand people singing along (every word, mind you) with the song that for years, you loved and loved and knew was huge anywhere but your home. and people looked blankly at you when you mentioned loving pulp. and if you squeezed it onto the stereo at a high school party, people just kinda looked like they didn't know what to do. but last night, you and three-thousand other dancers/singers/lovers came together and sang along with pulp. and it was easily one of the most transcendant things you ever experienced. as ultimately silly as that sounds. you finally felt part of a group. and you liked it. i'm getting slightly teary eyed writing this. god i'm a sentimental sop. i'm going to miss london. okay, kids. get ready for the end. it's been a marvelous ride. i'll update once or twice more before i bolt. then i'll speak to you from back the other side of the pond. god bless and keep you all. i'm filled with nothing but love for anyone. posted by J.
