np: r.e.m. - "fall on me"

tonight was j. ball's birthday dinner and so forth. i bought him tom waits' nighthawks at the diner album cos he didn't own it and any fan of tom should. while i was picking up his cd i purchased charles mingus' ah um which was recommended to me by mark, my piano instructor. he's the one that told me to go buy kind of blue if i was interested in getting into jazz and it worked beautifully. it's a great cd (the mingus one) and it's quite different in stature from miles davis. i'm loving it so far.

i took j. and two others to a bar (i was acting as d.d.) and was instructed (and paid) to pick them up later on. while driving back to campus i was stopped at the intersection of west elam and market st. it was one of those pointless late night traffic lights where absolutely no traffic is coming but you're still forced to wait a good minute or so for the light to turn green. law abiding citizen that i am.

but when you're up to your ear-tips in beautiful jazz. and it floats you above all that. there's almost no place better to be than in your car, sitting, just waiting for that light to turn green. the cash brothers discuss this point brilliantly in the song "nebraska" (which i've probably mentioned before). the character in their song is sitting at a stoplight (after being told he's 'not the one'), just waiting on it to turn. and listening to springsteen's nebraska album. everything's possible when you're at a point like that.

me, all i wanted to do was practice piano. but that'll have to wait until tomorrow.

we're so alive. running scared but so alive. but we're born dyin'. ain't that somethin'? i mean, really. it's..just, interesting to think about sometimes when i'm anxious and alone. carl (my roomie) just turned out his reading lamp leaving me cast in the glow of this 'ere monitor. i look even more pale than usual i'm sure. i probably ought to go to bed.

but the prospect of more sixty degree days is keeping me awake. sunlight is beautiful this time of year. nothing is more satisfying than warm, breezy weather in late january. *thinks* nothing, that is, except maybe getting tempretures in the seventies somewhere in july/august. *nod* that's about as good.

i don't reckon i feel like writing much else. i just had to put that down in words somewhere.

s'good to have hands.
