Saturday, February 09, 2002 np: the heater above me. i saw bob dylan tonight. and i do believe it was one of the best shows i've ever seen in my life. isn't it fabulous that someone in their 60s can still blow away people one-third their age in performance? sure, creed is still selling five million records. but who has their current album nominated for album of the year at the grammys? and who is still around performing after four decades? and whose influence will still be haunting us four decades and then some from now? not creed. definitely not creed. music is such a funny thing. and it can bring together such diverse audiences. young'uns. old'uns. hippies. suits. grandparents. grandchildren. parents. children. all dancing. singing. clapping. to "tangled up in blue" and "blowin' in the wind." and staring politely through what was a killer performance of "high water (for charley patton)" off of dylan's new record, love and theft. well, you can't win 'em all. it's just a heartwarming evening. and things are only bound to get better. in lieu of totally going off on a rampage, i'll sum up what i said to b. earlier tonight on the phone : anyone in this world..who will deny treatment..such as drugs to help hold off the onslaught of aids, or cancer treatments, etc..to someone just because they cannot afford it..is evil. very, very, evil. the pharmaceutical companies that continue to block efforts to manufacture cheap versions of proteaze (sp) inhibitors and ATZ and other such aids drugs..the ones that keep care and treatment and even education on how aids spreads out of africa..they are evil. is there any wonder africa leads the world in aids infections? hello! white assholes like myself will sit up in our ivory american tower and look down at the dirty, filthy continent (you know, the one we humans came from) and say: 'look at the animals. look at how they spread their disease. so stupid.' meanwhile we refuse to cancel third-world debts and force them to make crippling repayments which leaves countries trying to get back on track no money to spend on health care and education. leaving them a population huddling just to live day to day. tragically cast away in a world that pretends to care by sending money, but really doesn't by reaping twice what it gives in interest. if we're so fucking great, let's cut this loan bullshit. let's start giving gifts to countries every year. here you go, africa. here's several billion dollars a year from us. and guess what? you don't owe us any of it back. you don't owe us anything. we are your brethren. we want to help. we can afford to help. and we will help. because we will not sit by and let this travesty continue. for god's sake, you have suffered due to our callousness enough. *sigh* yeah. but what am i? i'm no good for just talking. i've got to act. we've got to act. or else..it's all for nothing. posted by J.
