Wednesday, April 17, 2002 np: sunny day real estate - diary tonight i railed against separatists: people who feel it is necessary, because of the way they are treated or the way they feel about society at large, to remove themselves entire from the human ecosystem and its various manifestations. and the question erupts: should we expect people to be integral and active parts of the system? is it right to expect compassion, respect and an active role in service to your fellow being out of others? you can't demand or make any of those things happen. but is it, as i said in a conversation earlier, "socially irresponsible" to remove yourself from society entire, and associate only with a like minded group of people and leave the rest of the ecosystem to its own devices? it's something i had an interesting discussion with b. about. she didn't fully agree with me. but that's how i like it. something we talk about a lot here at guilford is getting out of your "comfort zone." that is embracing and facing your own prejudices, your own ideas about people, to discover what it is like to see the world from the perspective of those you are so "different" from. to put yourself in situations where you feel uncomfortable. why? cos there are people who live their lives, day to day, living in fear and discomfort, in a society where they are "other" and are never any better. this is all stuff that was occupying my mind this evening. a lot more heavy-handed, i reckon, than my average entry here. a lot less focused on word-play and the flow of language as much as it is ideas and society. two spaces or one between sentences? what does MLA suggest? i had heard, from a some-what reliable source, that it had been 'updated' so that you were now supposed to put only a single space between sentences. there. those were both two spaces. what do you think? and how many oceans are there? what did you learn growing up? how many were you taught? and why are trinidad and tobago one country when they are two separate islands? why don't they share one name? that bothers j. ball immensely. i think it's humorus. b. just logged off for the evening while i was too busy typing this. i didn't even get to say goodnight. or i love you. i hate it when i'm slow. which is far too often. all the time. it's an interesting night to be male and caucasian and upper-middle class and alive. cos the weight of centuries is on your back. you'll never have sex again. you guilty, guilty fuck. i'm sorry. posted by J.
