Saturday, May 04, 2002 np: dark nights on market st. in my mind there are two reasons why dig me out reigns supreme over call the doctor as sleater-kinney's finest musical moment. now bear in mind, for you fellow fans, i am not excluding either the hot rock or all hands on the bad one from debate, it's just that for all intents and purposes, we're dealing with the two albums that make the crux of their launch into greatness. reason #1) they got a new drummer - between call the doctor and dig me out, lora mcfarlane was replaced with janet weiss on the drums. the change is apparent from moment one of "dig me out." the playing is tighter, the drumming is more precise and tremendous. and the guitar playing is better as a result. sleater-kinney has never had a bass player, so the drummer is not only the anchor but is the sole member of the rhythm section. so much importance falls on the drums in a band like that. lora mcfarlane was a fine drummer, but janet weiss is much, much better. sonically, it made all the difference in the world reason #2) the songwriting is better. call the doctor has its moments. but by the time dig me out was released, they were in full swing. the lyrics get much more descriptive and excellent. the songs also expand and take in much larger social ramifications. it's as if the band was holding itself in and finally let go. this is one of my main arguments about dig me out: it's the album where they went from being one of the best riot grrl bands ever, to being one of the best punk/rock and roll bands ever. they expanded their sound, their lyrics and their view to make them a band that mattered to something more than a handful of hardcore feminists in the pacific northwest. not to mention, giving all that the finger with the hot rock and proving that no one was going to pigeonhole them. not to mention that they could let all their best influences hang out. especially tom verlaine/television's influence on carrie brownstein's guitar work. for these two simple reasons (frankly, in my opinion, the first three songs on dig me out beat anything on call the doctor with the only song even coming close being the title track) i believe dig me out to be the superior album. oh. and i'm a few years late, but jurrasic 5's quality control is one hell of a record. thank you. posted by J.
