np: the jayhawks - the sound of lies
i turned down my street
to the autumn winds and leaves,
of rain come pouring down
it was in my heels
it was in my eyes
i felt like a fool of compromise
were it in me to
turn my back, again, on you
i'd still find you here
in the soft white lights
in the soft white faces
of this old town.
when i pulled the brake
i felt the mystery
unfold itself to me
like nesting dolls
revealing more and more
my complacency
my bitter hands
and the things i threw
in haste to get away
they landed in
a compost heap
and grew like garden weeds
i took two steps
and the lights came on
around the front porch wreath
you were standing there
in the window pane
looking down on me
i tried to put these words
between my chapping lips
and the chimney smoke
'how can i explain
what it meant to toss away
this nerve exposed?'
how can i explain
how it felt to toss away
this last bit of home.
