Sunday, July 21, 2002 np: silence ironic. i've been listening to a lot of, what i guess i would refer to as, 'guitar heroic' rock lately. mostly this was keyed by purchasing the new sonic youth album, murray street, the second installment of their new york triolgy. it's really a fascinating record. producer jim o'rourke (and now official fifth member of the band) has cleaned away a lot of the noise and clutter that could sometimes get in the way of complicated and beautiful songs. now don't get me wrong. sonic youth built its reputation on noise and doing it with an art and style that no one else could really master. all you have to do is pick up dirty to hear how they could make pop music out of a 'wall of sound.' (can you hear phil spector rolling over now?) or pick up their early records like evol, sister or the landmark daydream nation and you'll hear art as you never heard it: through feedback. the new record however, is clean, intricate and most of all..brilliant. the songs sparkle and evoke memories of the best of sonic youth's artsy ends. such as their highly underrated a thousand leaves which i re-discovered this week thanks to this new album. murray street features a lee ranaldo vocaled song, "karen revisited" which is a sister piece to "karen coltrane" from a thousand leaves. on that record, there's a stretch of three songs (although i believe they're interrupted by one three minute song) that defies bombast. "wildflower soul" (which stretches into the seven or eight minute mark), "hits of sunshine (for alan ginsburg)" which easily ropes in eleven minutes and "karen coltrane" which clocks in at nine. all this and on august seventh, i'm going to see these guys at the ritz. they have notoriously bad shows a lot. where self-indulgence takes on a whole new meaning. but i think it'll be worth it. sorry for the minor review rant. next time i'll go off about the new flaming lips album, yoshimi battles the pink robots which is easily as brilliant as its predecessor, the soft bulletin. well..i've rambled on enough i suppose. heads up: if you're in the concord, nc area, i'm playing my final show of the summer at on common grounds here in concord on friday 2nd august. if you need directions or something, contact me. sprockettoad@hotmail.com i'd love to see you there. posted by J.
