Tuesday, July 30, 2002 np: willie nelson - red headed stranger what a great, classic record. there really are very few songwriters with a craft as honed and perfect as willie's. i was also listening to stephen malkmus' self titled album today and damn, i forgot how catchy and fun it is. i've spent enough on music the last few entries. i mean, i could never spend enough on music exactly, but you know what i mean. all of a sudden there's this great re-surgence in straight edge. did i miss something? the history of it is so weird. go back to jonathan richman and the modern lovers' track "i'm straight" from the self titled modern lovers album that was recorded in 1971. but even richman knew what it meant to choose to be substance free. "now don't get me wrong/i like hippie johnny/but if he's so good, if he's so great/why can't he take this world/and take it straight?" so you disagree with someone. okay, fine. but richman admits, 'hippie johnny' (the druggie in this case) is a good guy. he just doesn't agree with his lifestyle choice. flash forward to minor threat. ian mackaye unwittingly (and to this day he doesn't associate himself with the movement at all) starts a movement with the song "straight edge." "don't drink/don't smoke/...at least i can fuckin' think!" so, a bit more antagonistic than jonathan richman, but he realised that to be straight edge was a personal choice. not a club. not a way to lord yourself over people. it's like picking a religion. it's something you believe. and you don't criticise others cos they disagree. you may think they're wrong, but you don't criticise. or start holy wars. so now lately, i've seen a lot of vegan/straight edge folks about. especially here on the 'net and more and more popping up in day to day. and the weird part is (as, unfortunately, there's always sort of been) there's a small, violent faction that seems to enjoy the thought of physically assaulting those who don't meet their 'clean' criteria. ridiculous. now, i love vegans. my girlfriend is vegetarian. i'm working on it. my good friend kristina is vegan, etc. but i love a good vegan who also loves to get snookered. i mean, who can beat getting plowed with someone who'll have plenty of hummus to offer to eat during the ordeal? i'm turning twenty-one next month (21st august - the golden birthday) and i'm fairly excited. why? i don't know. after all... i used to be straight edge. posted by J.
