np: antici...

i was up all night in a ballroom
dressed to the gills, unable to breathe
pressed against the chest of a hutterite lover
plain clothes, no music, no radio to dance to.
images of our marriage, my impending beard
no bands, no television. no nothing.
i'm finally twenty-one and still not baptized.
any day now, she whispers.
my hair quivers. my unwashed soul shivers.
she sings soft german lullabyes
lulling me in her umlats.
at five in the morning i stumble out of doors
clutching at my neck, ripping off my collar.
i have at her in spanish and she looks wounded.
i step viciously through the grass, trampling.
an idea of heaven crossed my lips.
and we waited.
