Friday, November 22, 2002 np: bob dylan - bringing it all back home today exploded with ideas. so i'm going to spend the new few days trying to hash some of them out, if i feel so inclined. i'm hoping that it will be the creative catalyst towards some work i need to accomplish. oral sex : it's a loving, intimate thing. or it's a casual, foreplay-ish thing. i've been guilty of both in my time. something that has been tackled more and more in sex education classes in recent years is an attempt to emphasize that oral sex is indeed a type of sex and therefore capable of transferring sexual diseases. it's beginning to re-define what we mean when we use the word 'sex' as an act as opposed to a biological category. certainly, our ideas are challenged as we begin to more openly involve the sexual identities of homosexuals in our society. what does this mean for our societal construct of 'virginity?' we think of sex as penetration, something obviously an option for homosexual men, but what about homosexual women? our traditional ideas of 'sex' are impossible for them, short of non-human implements. so are we to deny that sex can occur between two women, or do we re-define what it means to 'have sex?' the best option to me seems to be the latter. why can we not deny that 'sex' can occur between women? interestingly enough (and contrary to what i would have initially believed) the merriam-webster collegiate dictionary defines 'sexual intercourse' in two ways: a) heterosexual intercourse involving penetration of the vagina by the penis (see also: coitus) and b) intercourse involving genital contact between individuals other than penetration of the vagina by the penis. so they seem to acknowledge the existence of intercourse outside the realm of traditional heterosexual sex. however, some muddiness is involved. 'intercourse involving genital contact between individuals..' so, does that mean genital on genital contact? or genital contact by...an anus? a mouth? a hand? an old pillow case your mama was gonna throw out? to help refine a bit, i looked up 'intercourse.' definition number three reads as follows: physical sexual contact between individuals that involves the genitalia of at least one person. ah-hah. a break through. suddenly we have a broader idea of what intercourse can entail. only one set of genitals is needed. think about what that means for what defines 'sexual intercourse' as now, especially under the second definition. i'm going to cease discussing this for tonight at this point. but i think it's a nice jumping off point for a lot of other things that are implied through the biased lens of heterosexuality and masculine identity. now onward to the radio show...this was an extra long edition. robbie and matt didn't show up for half an hour into their show time so i had some time to play around. this week's show was informed by pitchfork media's recent top 100 albums of the 80s list. j's indie/rock mayhem - 20th november 2002 Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show" > Mclusky - "To Hell With Good Intentions" [i was jazzed cos a guy called in and said he really dug this song.] Rjd2 - "Let the Good Times Roll Pt. 2" Cephalic Carnage - "Redundant" [by request. really boring progressive hardcore.] Jim Yoshii Pile-Up - "Middle Harbor Road" > Ash - "Lose Control" [saw these guys monday night and they rocked. hard.] Jurassic 5 - "A Day at the Races" Wire - "Map Ref. 41°N 93°W" [one of my very favourite Wire songs from their 154 album] Pulp - "Weeds" > Hello from Waveland - "Speaking4Clapping" Spacemen 3 - "Come Down Softly to my Soul" [the first of the pitchfork list experiments of the night. one of the guys from this band went on to front spiritualized. this song was quite good.] The Streets - "Turn the Page" [some asshole wrote some rather derogatory things on my review of this record. if you don't like it, don't play it, dick. jesus. this album, by the way, is awesome. but yes, listen to it before you buy. odds are you'll hate it or love it.] Mission of Burma - "Academy Fight Song" [by request, but also a song from a top 100 album.] > Archers of Loaf - "Web Inside" [by request. great, classic north carolina indie band. eric bachman (now crooked fingers) was in this band. very good.] Mary Lou Lord - "Seven Sisters" Galaxie 500 - "Blue Thunder" [by request. another top 100 lister.] Clockhammer - "Bluest Eyes" [by request. these guys sounded a bit like mother love bone.] > The Aquanettas - "Love with the Proper Stranger" [i did this as the vinyl gem. a thing where i pick a random something i've never heard out and have listeners vote on it. this one lost. last year, ali (one of my apartment mates) ran across a girl named aquanett and became distraught. it bothers her immensely, so this band was for her.] Drive-by Truckers - "Birmingham" Lapdog - "Staring at the Sun" [new album from ex-Toad the Wet Sprocket members. very nice.] His Name Is Alive - "Universal Frequencies" [a band featuring a member of Elvis Hitler that i stumbled across on allmusic.com and thought i'd check out. this album, Stars on ESP, is really good.] > The Scaries - "Awake" [an uncharacterist acoustic song at the end of their new album, souvenir. quite good.] Josh Rouse - "Nothing Gives Me Pleasure" (acoustic) Son Volt - "Driving the View" Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Before You Were Born" [by request by gabe who was in the studio with me] > Noahjohn - "First Communion" XTC - "Summer's Cauldron" [another top 100 listee] Bruce Springsteen - "My City of Ruins" [one of the best songs from his show last week] > Mandatory 'Mats - The Replacements - "They're Blind" [the first 'Mats song i ever learned on guitar. it used to be me and jenny's co-song. the other was sleater-kinney's "one more hour." yeah, we were silly kids.] -end of my show but into the next half hour i covered- The Anomoanon - "Kick Back" [Ned Oldham's band. quite a good cd.] Jesus and Mary Chain - "Just Like Honey" [another top 100. awesome song.] Lucinda Williams - "I Think I Lost It" > Mclusky - "What We've Learned" [another Mclusky track for the guy who dug 'em so much.] Sleater-Kinney - "The Size of Our Love" [one of my top 5 all-time SK songs.] Gary Numan/Tubeway Army - "Me!
