Sunday, November 10, 2002 np: the church - starfish it's been awhile. i saw jim white last night. another amazing show. i might post the article i'm going to write about the show here when i get done with it. i saw the mountaingoats on thursday. john darnielle is a great, great songwriter. and the boss is this saturday. oh, man. i haven't posted these in awhile, so i missed sharing some good music with y'all but here's this week's radio show's playlist: j's indie/rock mayhem - 6th november 2002 Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show" [this is now officially the themesong of the show. heh.] > Division of Laura Lee - "Number One" [they put on a blistering set on halloween in chapel hill] Mclusky - "What We've Learned" [easily one of their most pixies-est numbers, but killer] B-52s - "52 Girls" [you know you love it] Verbena - "Baby Got Shot" [their new album is almost done and ready to roll] > Nirvana - "You Know You're Right" [by request] Jurassic 5 - "What's Golden" [what's golden? this song.] Rolling Stones - "Tumbling Dice" [possibly the best song off of exile on main street] Sleater-Kinney - "Combat Rock" [fitting given the outcome of the elections recently] > Hot Hot Heat - "No, Not Now" [they were brilliant at gate city noise a week and a half ago. a truly great live band.] Placebo - "Nancy Boy" [never play enough of these guys] Drive-by Truckers - "Dead, Drunk and Naked" [what a great album] The Embarassment - "Hip and Well Read" [one of those criminally overlooked indie bands of the 80s that had that herky jerky, bonfire drive going on. a great band.] > Q and Not U - "So Many Animal Calls" Run DMC - "Don't Stop" [from back from hell, RIP Jam Master Jay. music will really miss you, brother.] Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Mystery Girl" [by request. let it be known i hate this song. such is the risks of taking requests.] Johnny Cash - "I Hung My Head" [a great cover of a sting song from cash's new album] > Noahjohn - "First Communion" [a great band out of wisconsin. i met one of them at the beyond nashville festival in london last year. super nice guy. this album is great. atmostpheric alt-country is how i'd label it, but it's a really good listen. the album is called water hymns] Josh Ritter - "Come and Find Me" [i saw josh in chicago last weekend. got in free via his manager (thanks, darius!) and met josh. he's a super, super nice guy. if you get a chance, go see him cos he'll blow you away.] John Wesley Harding - "Still Photo" [josh was opening for this guy, who also really astounded me. his recorded material had never really attracted me before, but his live show is really awesome. this was one of the highlights of his set.] Giant Sand - "Almost the Politician's Wife" [as an encore closer, howe gelb from giant sand showed up to lend john wesley a hand. so i thought i'd play some giant sand as well.] > Sixteen Horsepower - "Flutter" [by request! a guy called in and said he'd read a lot about them and wanted to hear them. so i cranked up this, my favourite track from their newest album, folklore. jim white said sixteen horsepower puts on one of the best stage shows he's ever seen.] Neko Case - "Things that Scare Me" [also by request. a great song from her newest, blacklisted] Aimee Mann - "Guys Like Me" [coming to the carolina theatre in durham in december. i can't wait.] Tom Waits - "A Little Rain" [some idiot called in the week before while i was playing "invitation to the blues" (off of tom's album small change) and asked if i'd play some tom waits. so to get back at him for not paying attention, i played a different song off of the same album as the song he requested. heh. besides, it fit in better.] > Concert Feature [a new deal i may try to do each week where i feature three songs from an artist playing in the area within the next week] Jim White - "The Wound That Never Heals," "Ghost-town of My Brain" and "King of the Road" [all three are from jim's last album, no such place. the latter is a really, really messed up cover of roger miller's song. it's so great. please, please, please check out jim's music. he's a very deserving and amazing songwriter.] > Josh Rouse - "Nothing Gives Me Pleasure" (acoustic) [from a new ep featuring some live radio cuts and some remixes, this is a great acoustic version of a song from his last record that was recorded for the NPR show, acoustic café. the ep also has them doing a great cover of the cure's "a forrest"] Mandatory 'Mats - The Replacements - "Date to Church" f/ Tom Waits [i love this song.] [the show officially ended there but robbie and matt were late so i also played..] Hot Hot Heat - "No, Not Now" [by request] The La's - "There She Goes" [easily one of the best pop songs of all time] > Lovers - "No Words Allowed" [ by request. this album is growing on me] The Mountaingoats - "The Fall of the Star High School Running Back" [since they were playing the next night, i played this great song from all hail west texas] Ashley Robinson - "Fades" [a great band from Charlotte who i could see really great things coming out of..very esoteric..british style dreamy guitar rock] and that's the show. posted by J.
