np: a christmas story in the background

from my website you may have read about my former band aslan. we were only together briefly, but i enjoyed it greatly. it was the only band i've been in where i had a major part of the creation, both lyrically and musically. in loman, i was simply responsible for lyrics. in aslan, my solo ambitions (which had already found an outlet in local coffee shops) came to a larger sound. i was able to hear in actuality what had been pulsing through my head. only this time it was interpreted by others. it was larger than what i could hear.

one of the members was a guy named brad. i've kept touch on and off with brad since leaving concord as my main residence. last year he informed me he'd joined the army. i really wasn't sure what to make of it, other than chalking it up to yet another eccentricity for a guy who was one of the drifting many. the guy who gave me his copy of the geraldine fibbers' butch on cd cos he'd made a tape copy. strange. monday, his mother came into the bookstore where i'm working and told me i should drop by the house before january 3rd. why? because he's shipping out for kuwait on the 7th.

what's about to happen in the middle east (hopefully) is not my generation's vietnam equivalent or anything. but people my age are going off to fight a war that is as much about the concept of oil is thicker than blood is thicker than water as it is this shifting, obtuse idea of 'freedom.' we have hack country artists who don't have one-millionth the conviction and drive of woody guthrie, cranking out quasi-racist and hate-mongering songs about revving up the war machine and shoving proverbial shoes up insert-token-bad-guy-here's ass. and when someone takes the time to write a really calm and collected and more brutally honest ode to the happenings of the past year and some months (see bruce springsteen's the rising), it doesn't get the same response. yes, it sold a lot. yes, it beat out linkin park's re-mix cd for the top spot on billboard the debut week. but while toby keith's out entertaining zealot xenophobes, bruce springsteen is out donating money to urban ministries in greensboro. and other cities. making an honest difference. what've you been doing lately, toby? writing a song about saddam to capitalize on how much money you've made in the last year? give me a break.

i get so riled up. i get so full of venom. and it's all because i'm really sad. and really scared that a guy who helped bring life to my artistic expression (along with a lot of others) may not come back from the desert alive. and all so my gas prices will drop. ten..measley..cents.

i've got news for you, george.

we're worth more than that.

want to start a war? grab a gun. you're first over the top. good luck, mr. president.
