Wednesday, December 25, 2002 np: computer hummmmmmm i hit the publish button without really thinking. then i got done and thought i wanted to add more. i know you can edit things, but..this seems more real. i dressed up partially in my santa claus outfit for work today. i received very few comments. one lady did say that i 'looked cute in my little costume.' thanks, grandma. normally i'd feel silly for doing that. in my mind i'd even justified it. 'as much as santa claus has come to represent the commercial and materialistic side of christmas culture, i am simply catering to that whim of consumerism by dressing as santa in the very bastian of what he has come to represent: the shopping mall.' okay, so it's really not a bad idea but it reeks of pretentiousness. a handful of my atheist friends hate the holidays. think it reeks of the contradictory and hipocritical nature that to them is inherent in christianity and religion in general (but mostly christianity). i can understand. but i also drove past a church on poplar tent rd. today that always has little sayings out on their marquee. "don't leave christ out of christmas," the sign read. and i thought about it as i drove. and i agreed. even if you are not religious, pious or a believer in anything outside of what our flesh can accomplish, it is not impossible to understand what it is that the broader idea of jesus represents. forgiveness, charity, helping, loving, peace, equality and most importantly..as stressed by his demise on the cross..that through faith can come all things. good works mean nothing if there is not a faith behind them. a faith that there is good to be accomplished. that there is a better world to reach. that hate and oil and blood and war can't constantly win the day. there will come a time when even tyrants like george w. bush, saddam hussein, kim jong il and so forth cannot muster the will of the people against what feels right. toyota just spent millions of dollars building robots to work as salesmen on the floors of their auto dealerships. meanwhile, people starve. hi, i'm toyota cooporation. somehow, it behooves me more to create a robot to sell cars than to do charitable work in my own country, despite the fact that creating car-salesperson robots is not only a) a really, really dumb idea but b) a waste of time and energy and yet another potential way to lay off workers. way to go. since i was crass capitalist claus today, i'll relay the list of gifts i have recieved so far and from whom they originated: nice sweater and copy of psychotic reactions and carburetor dung by lester bangs: the work of a legendary rock critic - rock 'n' roll as literature and literature as rock 'n' roll. - from b. a zen rock garden - from b.'s mother. she is funny. i like it. that is all. well, and my parents ordered me a new computer. very swank. i'm happy. mostly cos sylvia (my current computer lover) is going on three and a half years old with only one minor upgrade. she's a pentium I celeron processor. and i remember when 486's seemed like hyperspace. i'll need to create a name for my new computer. sylvia worked so hard and well for me. sylvia's name came from two places: 1) a friend of mine, sylvia, who was an inspiration in so many ways. she wanted to be a teacher (it didn't end up suiting her well) and she introduced me to two towering influences and loves of my musical self: tom waits and leonard cohen. i miss her. 2) the song "sylvia" by pulp, which is on their lovely, underrated album, this is hardcore. but did i tell you i think i already know what i want to name my firstborn female child? zola jane. zola, after my grandmother, and jane after one of my favourite girl names. i've known several janes who have all been wonderful, unique people. it's so simple and unassuming. and really better than zuzu. although, i'll have to admit, despite their lackluster reviews, zuzu's petals has one of the coolest band names ever. especially if you know the allusion. i hope christmas day shines bright with happiness and love for you all. keep fighting. keep living. keep breathing. the moment you stop...the real terrorists have won. posted by J.
