Thursday, January 30, 2003 np: kathleen edwards - "sweet little duck" "my song for you" do you find me a terrible aquaintance? you think i cannot care at all that i don't worry what you are thinking you think i'm using you to fall wake up wake up i'm leaving i'm leaving. do my drunken songs count for nothing i still mean it every word if i could i would take your sunshine up and shine her from my shoulders i'm sure wake up wake up i'm leaving i'm leaving. kathleen edwards makes me want to play again. to write more and work more. it's one of those records (i.e. dulcinea, pleased to meet me, car wheels on a gravel road, etc.) that knocks me senseless for weeks at a time. although granted, failer has a different feel than any of those three. they each have their unique sense of timing and destruction. i still think, thematically, toad's dulcinea is an amazing piece of work. i think the theme of ongoing, infinite life that plays out between the closing tryptic of "inside," "begin" and "reincarnation song" and that ultimately links back to the album opening, "fly from heaven," is just astounding. i would normally be posting the playlists from my shows, but i've been training folks this week, so half of the shows haven't been mine. i don't bother keeping up with them. i'll be back to my self-indulgent posting next week. i've added so many great records this week that it's tough to play my own stuff sometimes, cos i'll end up having to sacrifice a play for something in rotation to do it. as a music director, i feel bad. cos that one play can totally mean the difference between a chart position or charting at all. so how corrupt and useless is cmj? despite its obvious corporate origins, it does provide a source for music that would not find an outlet on radio otherwise. i do feel like we fill an important niche in radio. people seem to genuinely enjoy our radio station. i worry about what difference it makes until i heard records like failer and literally fall over myself and begin to do anything to get it played. even calling in requests myself, despite having a copy of it at my disposal. i don't normally do that. just so you know. it's so weird. cos all those feelings just went away. in a wash of something different but the same. i've got a whole new beast before me. and its soft fur entices me. have you ever drifted off to sleep in a soft, warm bed while being severed in half? yeah. it's bliss. my bed's just not warm enough anymore. fifteen days. i miss you. do i have to die to be reborn? this is not a rhetorical question. posted by J.
