np: the dream syndicate - days of wine and roses

i had this whole really nice entry written out with lots of links for you guys to see stuff and such. and then i clicked the wrong button and bam. gone. fuck.

now i don't feel like re-writing any of it. i had gone into detail about the emotions in that last piece i had written and posted. i went into my feelings about greensboro and some other things.

the album i'm listening to right now is quite amazing. i got it through some various links at allmusic.com and liked the way they described it. found a copy to listen to and now i'm absorbing it for the second time through. making a tape copy since it's on vinyl. something along the lines of the noise of the velvet underground with the songwriting structure of them and other bands. at the wrong time, it would've disappeared. but it was released at the right moment in the 80s where it made the right connections for people. that landslide of influence, you know?

i also bought the church's heyday today on a nice 2 cd import version including all the b-sides from the singles from the album and some videos for the singles. it's really good, just like starfish and every other bit of the church i've ever heard. a band you really have to hear to understand and when you do..i hope you love them as much as i do.

i bought that and a vinyl copy of REM's reckoning at gate city noise, this amazing record shop downtown on tate st. andrew and matthew (the two owners) are two of the best things to happen to greensboro. they really create a vibrant and bubbling center of activity for music in a town without a major mid-level venue. there is nothing equivalent to the cat's cradle or ziggy's or tremont in greensboro. there're just tiny places (cedar st., gate city, guilford college) and massive ones (the coliseum). nothing between.

but i love greensboro. i've come to really enjoy it over the last year or so. having a car helps with that. and i'm looking forward to the fact that i'll be spending the next two years or so here. it will be enjoyable.

"caroling" came from a very specific feeling i had the other night when i was home. i was out with my parents celebrating my mother's birthday. and i began thinking about a family i knew and a happening i had been a part of. i won't go into details. but i went to the wake. and i knew what had gone down. and i still get really weird feelings when i read the last half of my chorus: 'in the morning light/you look so bright/my darling, how is it there?' i think i slightly romanticized the feelings between the narrator and the subject but i don't think it's unwarranted. it's part of the weird, terrible situation. i really want to put some good music to it. i think it deserves it. it's an important thing to me.
