Monday, February 17, 2003 np: glen phillips - live at largo so steve at aware records was very nice to send me a copy of the new live glen phillips record. it's very good. you should all go buy it. a recap of the past week: the chuck d. lecture was fantastic. i was invited to the pre-lecture dinner and it ended up being me, seven or either others, and chuck. i sat right next to him and ate dinner and talked. it was amazing. he's incredibly cool, very down to earth and knowledgable. we also go pictures of him in QFS with one of our t-shirts. can you feel our cool points increasing? and then dan (the station manager) and i ended up being part of chuck's security escort to the lecture. that basically entailed us having a nice evening stroll across campus. we sat in on the press conference..and then went to the lecture where chuck held court expounding on all sorts of things. he talked about materialism especially and hit home with the idea that whatever you own: a watch, a car, a house, etc. it should be a step down from you. you, the human, means more than any thing ever could. people have a hard time understanding that sometimes. he then spent close to two hours answering questions from the audience and still hung around afterwards to sign autographs and talk with people. he was incredibly gracious and friendly and one of the nicest musicians/artists i've ever met. when you get a chance to meet someone who is an idol of yours (as chuck is for me) and it turns out that they're a great person, it only bolsters your opinion of them and humanity in general. i came out of there feeling awesome. rejuvenated. this weekend i went to chicago as it was b.'s birthday today and we had a glorious weekend together. i bought her a copy of wire's chairs missing which is a great record. she had become interested in them so i was only happy to further that interest. she seemed to really like it. i'm glad. we ate a lot (as we tend to do) and spent a lot of time just enjoying eachother's company. it's tough when your very best friend lives so far away. everytime i go back with her i realize why she's my best friend. and so much more. and it makes the time we spend with one another that much sweeter. and to know that..in only two years..we won't have to worry about that again. that's nice. i bought an ethical biography of lincoln and the byrds' sweetheart of the rodeo which is a phenominal record. this re-issued version has the original version of gram parson's "lazy days" on it, which wasn't on the original album. some of you might have heard that song on my show before, although it was the flying burrito brothers' version that was actually the first to see the light of day, from their album burrito deluxe. i think i'm more partial to the burritos' version (gram seemed to have more of an idea for it by then) but the byrds version is still very, very good. tonight i also bought the cd re-issue of the dream syndicate's the days of wine and roses. i spoke about that album a couple of entires ago, but the cd reissue has some really nice bonus tracks on it. kathleen edwards is on leno tonight. so i'm sure i'll speak a little more about that at a later time. i'm getting psyched up for SXSW as the days close in towards march. i'll be seeing dilated peoples on friday..and possibly alejandro escovedo on saturday. god bless music. posted by J.
