Saturday, February 22, 2003 np: nicolai dunger - tranquil isolation wow. i was really excited to see this new nicolai dunger land in my mailbox yesterday. i had no clue he had another one so soon. he's also going to be at south by southwest. the list of amazing bands grows by leaps and bounds everyday. god help me if i can't see them all. i submitted my application for the three-named-woman-whose-name-i-can-never-remember scholarship yesterday. it's $25,000 that is up for grabs amongst graduating english majors who are pursuing post-grad work. you had to write a short 1-2 p. explanation of how you would use whatever money you ask for. i went for the gold and asked for $8,000. mostly to cover living expenses while doing my student teaching next fall. housing ($4,000 = 12 months x $300), food/expenses ($2,000), gre/praxis/grad app. fees ($500), and first semester grad school tuition ($1,500). if i came up on any of that, it'd be helpful. but if i got it all...well..i'd freak. and be very grateful. i'm worried my gpa wasn't high enough though. we'll see by the end of march, yes. last night michael and jeni and i travelled up to see dilated peoples at the cat's cradle. we went to el rodeo for dinner beforehand (after picking up justin, michael's brother). then to the show. there were four groups: doujah raise(?), the away team, little brother and dilated. the first two were decent. little brother, from raleigh, was very nice. for just two guys (and a dj) on stage, they kept the pace high and my attention focused. really playful and fun and good beats. and of course, dilated was amazing as they always are. even better than their show in london. plus..they did "proper propaganda" which is probably close to being my favourite song by them. The pen is mighter than the sword Cause the pen gives the word sending swords to war They twisted it when he quoted Mao Tse-tung and said political power comes from the barrel of a gun The officer meets his fate, .44 by .38 It was a dirty deed, but that don't mean a dirty case Witnesses against the state are shushed Facts overlooked so the judge can throw the book Perhaps for politicians with something to prove In the city where they blew the roof off of MOVE Yo, questions when answered leads to more questions Why it takes months to deliver a confession? The principles are the same even without the name But I still say M-U-M-I-A I have to fight, it could easily be me But just beginning to think is beginning to free me Although I use my brain before using a fist Don't push it, wake up, refuse and resist! although it has its stumbling moments, it's still a hell of a song. and a great first attempt at opening up their political consciousness. i'm hoping there's a lot more on the next album, which we were told last night, drops in august. i'm excited. we at the radio station went and did a bowl-a-thon for the greensboro humane society this afternoon. we raised close to two-hundred dollars for them and i bowled a 174. i was pleased. it's a dreary day here. all this rain and flash flood warnings and so forth. it may be time for some del amitri lyrics.. well there ain't no cloud that a bottle can't chase away.. well put, boys. tonight, we drink. posted by J.
