Thursday, February 20, 2003 np: ryan adams - heartbreaker, kathleen edwards - failer and blur - the great escape not simultaneously, mind you. but rather, over the course of preparing dinner, having several phone conversations and mopping the floor. and now i just put on blur's self-titled album which has taken me years to get over. my highly subjective high-school years left me rather dispondant at this album. "song 2" took off and with everyone and their mother humming 'woo-hoo' i was about to die. what had happened to one of my favourite brit bands that they weren't my band anymore? well, in re-examining this album now, obviously what they were doing was expanding and making a great record. but it was hard to deal with that at the time. that trio of blur albums (modern life is rubbish, parklife and the afore mentioned the great escape) are about as good as it gets with mid-90s britpop (pulp's absolute genius being one of those excused). anyway. i really should get on with this. i'm due up in six hours and some change to get ready to go to my internship at ragsdale high. ah, the joys of returning to high school. i'm really looking forward to it though. tomorrow just marks observation and some other things. it'll be interesting. now to the meat of the program: j's indie/rock mayhem - 19th february 2003 Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show" > Paloalto - "Throwing Stones" Jesse Malin - "Wendy" Idlewild - "Live in a Hiding Place" Placebo - "Johnny and Mary" [a robert palmer cover, a b-side to 'slave to the wage'] > Supergrass - "Grace" [off their awesome new life on other planets] The Roots - "The Seed (2.0)" [i'd meant to play "break you off," but miscounted the tracks. oh, well. this cody chesnutt cover is still a bangin' song.] Crooked Fingers - "You Can Never Leave" Hayden - "Dynamite Walls" [this song never gets old. god, it's beautiful.] > Moving Units - "Between Us and Them" [a great new band who remind me of gang of four, wire and public image ltd. packed together. not that far off of radio 4. dancey, skittish post-punk. really, really good.] Minus the Bear - "Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse" [by request. the album that has been the bane of my chart existence the past few weeks. it edged out kathleen edwards last week and is absolutely killing. this was a good song.] Ted Leo/Pharmacists - "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone?" [by request. i'd been wanting to hear ted leo, so this was fine. then i realized i'd heard this song before. it's quite good.] Midnight Oil - "Sell My Soul" [i was composing a song in my head earlier today that used a very midnight oil-esque sing-along chorus, so i thought i'd play some classic oils.] Dead to Fall - "Prologue" [by request. a very short, really good metal instrumental.] > Kathleen Edwards - "Six O'clock News" [she was on leno on monday. played this song and man. i can't wait to see her.] Glen Phillips - "Easier" [from his new live at largo album. i love this song. the lyrics are some of his wittiest and best.] The Clean - "Big Soft Punch" The Byrds - "You Don't Miss Your Water" [from the great re-issue of sweetheart of the rodeo] > The Jayhawks - "Save It For a Rainy Day" [first single from their upcoming album. hoorah!] Talib Kweli - "Rush" REM - "Pretty Persuasion" Common - "The Hustle" [from his absolutely stunning electric circus album.] > Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter - "Drinking with Strangers" [this album really got me when i reviewed it. similar to neko case music wise (an ex-bass player of hers is in the band, as well as an ex-member of whiskeytown) but with more of a beth orton vocal feel. a really good album. the song is gorgeous.] Big Star - "When My Baby's Beside Me" [every so often..you need a little big star.] The Ramones - "Needles and Pins" John Prine - "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore" > Eleni Mandell - "I've Got a Tender Heart" [another new country disc..think even more old-school. patsy cline, tammy wynette, loretta lynn, etc.] The Only Ones - "Another Girl, Another Planet" The Heartbreakers - "Born to Lose/Born Too Loose" [i don't know what the title is. the sleeve and the record say two different things and they say both in the song. it's witty in a way.] The Dream Syndicate - "That's What You Always Say" [damn they rock.] The Scaries - "Counting Scars" > Mandatory 'Mats - The Replacements - "I Hate Music" i've added a few new blogs to my are 'friends' electric list. i hope you'll check them out. i find them informative. posted by J.
