Friday, February 07, 2003 np: snow falling on cedars. i am in the midsts of a lot of conflicting emotions. i am really, really irritated with the college and rep. howard coble right now. that man will not speak at my commencement. if he does, i don't really feel like walking. if you're not up with what's been going down, coble said on a radio talk show the other day that he agreed with the u.s. governments decision to imprison japanese-americans in internment camps during world war II. a ridiculous statement seeing as how the government formally apologized for doing it nearly a decade ago and paid restitution of around twenty-thousand dollars per prisoner. being that he is a guilford graduate, he should also recognize that quakers were imprisoned in internment camps for being consciencious objectors during the war as well. how soon he forget his collegiate heritage. well too bad, howard. you don't represent me. and you certainly don't represent the ideals this college claims to uphold. so out, damn spot. i'm not havin' it. i'll be in founder's lobby the next few days getting petition signatures if you're interested in signing. j's indie/rock mayhem - wednesday 5th february [tonight's theme was great pop songs of the 90s and i had a blast doing it.] Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show" > Matthew Sweet - "Sick of Myself" [the song that turned me onto Messr. Sweet.] Blur - "Girls and Boys" Jane's Addiction - "Been Caught Stealin'" Oasis - "Don't Look Back In Anger" [yes, 'wonderwall' was bigger but this is the better song.] > Flaming Lips - "She Don't Use Jelly" Toadies - "Possum Kingdom" [the first request of the night. great song.] Dinosaur Jr. - "Feel the Pain" [by request. another great one.] Deee-lite - "Groove is in the Heart" [god, what a song.] > Semisonic - "Singing in my Sleep" [again, yes, 'closing time' was bigger but this is the better song.] Squirrel Nut Zippers - "Hell" [everytime i break out hot and listen to this song over again, it reminds me how much the SNZ really were an amazing band and they truly rocked.] Ben Folds Five - "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" [brilliant satire.] Toad the Wet Sprocket - "All I Want" > Blind Melon - "No Rain" [of course, right?] Inspiral Carpets - "Commercial Rain" [by request. i hadn't heard this before but i'll take the guy's word on it. good song.] For Squirrels - "Mighty K.C." [please tell me someone else remembers this song! cos i remember it being huge for awhile.] Stone Temple Pilots - "Interstate Love Song" [quite possibly their best song ever.] > The La's - "There She Goes" [quite possibly the most perfect pop song ever.] Smashing Pumpkins - "1979" [took me years...but now i love it.] Pulp - "Common People" [not a huge hit here, but it made pulp in england.] Radiohead - "High and Dry" [one of their biggest and best.] > Gin Blossoms - "Hey Jealousy" [now, new miserable experience knocks me on my ass. it's so good.] Fountains of Wayne - "Radiation Vibe" [from one of the most perfect pop albums of the 90s.] REM - "Man on the Moon" Weezer - "Buddy Holly" [it was this or 'say it ain't so.' and although sias is clearly the better song, this was so much bigger than anything else in the world.] > Us3 - "Cantaloop" [if there is one song that unites my generation..it might just be this.] thanks for listening. posted by J.
