Sunday, March 30, 2003 np: michael penn - mp4: days since a lost time accident it's been such an odd period of time. before the accident i was in such a vibe to be writing nearly constantly here. and it's taken awhile to regain that. although in the interim i actually wrote, musically, the first new song i've written in quite some time. i've been only writing lyrically for a good while. i want to try sharing the lyrics with you guys. and see what you think. but i'll get to that in a second. i've been working on catching up at my piled up school load. as well as catching up with the increasing amount of music i need to review. so while i'm sitting here typing and could very easily be reviewing an album, what do i do? i pull out my favourite michael penn album and listen to it instead. i'm good at this. but it'd been awhile since i'd taken this album in and after seeing him perform at south by southwest, my interest in his work was rekindled. i was on the verge of shouting out for my favourite song by him ("don't let me go") which is from the album i'm listening to, but he beat me to the punch and played it. and it was wonderful. serendipity was this weekend here at guilford. it's our grand spring party that brings all kinds of people out of the woodwork. thursday night turned into a large party down here at the apartments and i didn't feel tremendously up to being about. but friday night was a different story and i ended up watching the foam party at bryan from the third floor. then found myself out in the woods at a bonfire party. quite an odd night. people skinny dipping in the lake. flasks. beautiful people being beautiful friends. on saturday, brynn came up as she is heading back to chicago today. we spent the day doing various fun things and last night was the big serendipity concert. brother reade (local greensboro hip-hop) and little brother (from raleigh) put on a good opening act. especially little brother who were even tighter than when i saw them open for dilated peoples about a month ago. their new album, the listening is a really solid and giddy record and i wish them all the best. i would be very, very proud of north carolina to see them blow up nationally. the main act was the absolutely breathtaking blackalicious. i wasn't as deeply familiar with their music as i am some of the other hip-hop groups who get talked up in the same vein as them (jurassic 5, the pharcyde, &c.) but they came out and blew me away. it was easily one of the most energetic, uplifting and positive shows i've seen in years. guilford seemed to come alive and to mean something for the first time since this war broke loose. i've even been reading up more on bill hicks, god bless him. i find it to be one of the saddest things that he isn't here to see what has happened in the past five years and to give his ideas out as freely as he did until his death in 1994. the title of this piece isn't permanent. just thought i'd give it one.
