Sunday, April 27, 2003 np: blackalicious - blazing arrow well nearly a week has gone by since my last post. and there's a lot to cover. i had this great list of ideas to talk about from a recent ancient greece class. we'll see if i get to it. last night was the final WQFS party of the year hosted by my apartment. matt bostick, lawrence and i threw together a ramones cover band to have as much fun as possible. we only started practicing (and learning songs) since wednesday and it was amazing how well it came together. granted, ramones songs aren't tough..but it's tough to make them sound anywhere near as good as they played them live. their live shows were absolutely incendiary. and getting even close to that was tough. but what really, really helped was the crowd. the sheer amount of people there watching was great and their reaction even better. they were what totally fueled how great and sweaty and totally invigorating the entire thing was. and thanks to everyone who came or helped. and especially to my fellow apartment mates, whom are wonderous people for actually coming up with the idea for us to host the last QFS party to begin with. the set list ran as such: "blitzkrieg bop" (small pause as i broke a string), "beat on the brat," "sheena is a punk rocker," "rockaway beach," "the kkk took my baby away," "cretin hop," "do you remember rock and roll radio?," "i wanna be sedated," "fuck security" (song we wrote especially in case the party was being shut down) and "let's dance." then, as people yelled, john moore came up and took over on guitar, taking a page straight out of sophomore year, the guys who used to make up hooray for everything with me on vocals, doing a cover of the misfits' "astro zombies." i had too much fun, man. for real. i'll hold off on the intense ideas for now, but less than two weeks until graduation. i can't believe this is almost over, guys. i don't really know what to say. j's indie/rock mayhem - 23rd april 2003 Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show" > Liz Phair - "Extraordinary" [from her forthcoming self-titled album. not a terrible song, but the matrix did the production and i don't like it much. i first heard this song at south by southwest at an interview with liz and it's made me worried about the album in general ever since. i worry that a really, really world class artist has somehow been..well..as pretentious as this is to say..tainted.] Idlewild - "The Modern Way of Letting Go" [just an amazingly great rock song.] New York Dolls - "Looking for a Kiss" [i just love mixing in david johansen's "when i say i'm in love, i mean i'm in love, l-u-v.." at the beginning of this song with the end of the prior track. good stuff.] Primal Scream - "Movin' On Up (single edit)" [i'd been listening to screamadelica that day and grabbed our single version from out of the back. a great, great album.] > Verbena - "Six White Horses" [between verbena and the drive-by truckers, i've been all about the 'bama bands of late.] Yo La Tengo - "Georgia vs. Yo La Tengo" [from their new album. i played this for my friend emily who was 'feeling good' so called in. heh.] Travis - "Midsummer Night's Dreaming" Richard Hell and the Voidoids - "Blank Generation" > Portastatic - "Noisy Night" [a great new record from mac of superchunk.] The Jayhawks - "Save It For a Rainy Day" Flying Burrito Brothers - "Lazy Days" Cody Chesnutt - "Upstarts in a Blowout" > Radiohead - "There there." Ian McCulloch - "She Sings (All My Life)" [front man of echo and the bunnymen's first solo album.] Placebo - "This Picture" [fuck pitchfork. this album is damn good.] The Stone Roses - "Sally Cinnamon" > Stephen Malkmus - "Dark Wave" Haley Bonar - "Carwreck" [wow..this album is good.] Lucinda Williams - "Sweet Side" M.
