Saturday, April 05, 2003 np: bruce springsteen - nebraska i won't bore you guys with another complete play list, but i'll share the interesting or less common stuff i played. bryan is up in harrisonburg, virginia at the macrock festival, so i filled in for his show this evening. j's indie/rock mayhem highlights - 5th april 2003 The Housemartins - "I Smell Winter" [a great b-side from a really great, criminally overlooked british band from the late 80s. oddly enough, norman cook (a.k.a. fatboy slim) was their bass player.] Radio 4 - "Start a Fire" [gotham is one hell of a record. along with moving units and the rapture, these guys make up an awesome trio of post-punk re-visionism] PIL - "Seattle" [since radio 4 took their name from a song on pil's second edition album, i thought it fitting to throw some on afterwards. this is from their 1987 album, happy. it's an interesting song as it was written as a response to when an understandably pissed off mudhoney trashed pil's dressing room during their performance.] Galaxie 500 - "Decomposing Trees" [if there ever was a staple indie band..here's one. this song was neat because of the tenor sax played by ralph carney who has worked a lot with tom waits.] > Squirrel Nut Zippers - "Ghost of Stephen Foster" [this very quickly turned in a heavy north carolina show and this was the impetus for it. i miss the squirrel nut zippers a lot.] Archers of Loaf - "Web In Front" [another north carolina band of yore. back in the day..chapel hill was even more the shit than it is today. if you don't know these guys..perhaps you know crooked fingers, which is the archers' ex-front man, eric bachman.] Superchunk - "Seed Toss" [jeremy wanted to hear "art class" but i didn't have my copy of here's to shutting up with me. so i found the tossing seeds singles collection on vinyl. yet another NC band] Ben Folds - "Annie Waits" [sure, he lives in australia now. but he's such a tarheel. and a great songwriter.] Little Brother - "So Fabulous" [north carolina's up and coming. they opened for blackalicious here last week and put on a hellacious show. they are some fine, fine hip-hop. the onion's a.v. club gave their album, the listening, a rave review.] > Propaghandi - "Albright Monument, Baghdad" [all too appropriate considering. propaghandi's last album was a blistering masterpiece of political punk.] Sunny Day Real Estate - "Killed By an Angel" [i saw them on the tour for this album. good stuff.] Iris Dement - "My Life" [i would be seeing iris on may 1st at the cat's cradle. except wilco had to pick that night to actually be playing up in asheville. so guess where i'm going? yup.] Tom McRae - "Bloodless" [i really ought to play this guy more often. i bought his album while in britain, sound unheard, simply because he was short listed for the mercury prize. it was worth it.] Patti Smith - "Break It Up" [the song from horses that was co-written with tom verlaine. and you can tell, buddy. this song rules.] eh, that's enough of that. i'm speaking at college meeting for worship tomorrow. i have a nice talk in my head, i believe. in case i didn't inform you guys either, i was elected to be the male speaker at graduation also. i'm really thrilled. and now that howard coble has withdrawn from speaking..even more elated. i'll talk about the panel here on the 14th soon. cos if any of y'all can make it..it's going to be an interesting time. posted by J.
