Tuesday, April 01, 2003 np: getting bored in class again. three new albums came into my posession yesterday. here's a small taste. placebo - sleeping with ghosts : this literally snuck up on me out of nowhere. i knew they were working on a new album, but had no idea it was completed. it was released today. i went to gate city noise and bought it at the midnight sale last night. i was a bit worried, cos as really excellent as their previous album, black market music, seemed to be, it hasn't worn as well with me as without you i'm nothing has over the years since i've purchased them. immediately the album quashed my fears in the form of "bulletproof cupid," a frankly levelling instrumental piece that starts the album off. thank goodness they've gotten out of the knack of opening their albums with songs that, while really good, don't represent the rest of the record at all. (alá "pure morning" and "taste in men") the rest of the record is equally as strong with some really smashing steps out for their style. on the whole, i think it's better than black market music and slowly closing on without you i'm nothing. if you're a placebo fan, i think you'll really dig it. you can stream the album at their official site. lucinda williams - world without tears : this is released next week, but the advance copy came into the station. it's flat out amazing, as her records usually are. it seems to continue in the style of essence, only with a thicker and more rocking sound than the majority of that album. plus, her songwriting has taken a step back out. her last album featured shorter, less detailed lyrics that resulted in some really sultry, emotionally fragile work. the new record steps back out to the well detailed travels of her traditional style. my personal favourite songs so far are "those three days" and "real live bleeding fingers and broken guitar strings" (as, if you read the article i posted earlier, you would imagine). but it's shaping up to be quite an impressive record. there are very few songwriters like her. and there never will be. the jayhawks - rainy day music : welcome back, guys. as much as i really enjoyed smile (despite the fact that i felt it was a slight step backward from their absolutely genius sound of lies) it felt like a pop record that just didn't shine like it should. definitely the shimmery "i'm gonna make you love me" was a classic piece of jayhawks mastery, but some of the others left a bit to be desired. this album starts off with five of the best songs gary louris has ever written. the album just leaves you absoultely rolling in rootsy, pop harmony with, as the all music review puts it, 'hooks for days.' i think this is easily one of their strongest recordings yet, and god bless them for having the brilliant insight to bring in matthew sweet for backup harmonies on three, count 'em, three of the best songs of the album. admittedly, i have nothing but a biased feeling about the jayhawks. their albums have absolutely lived in my cd player at times. especially last summer when sound of lies didn't leave my car stereo for a good month. i just absolutely could never get tired of listening to them. and i think that speaks precisely to what this album offers. rainy day music and then some. posted by J.
