Wednesday, April 16, 2003 np: uncle tupelo - no depression these uncle tupelo re-issues are fantastic. i don't know how much they've been re-mastered but they sound really, really good all the same. flashback to last semester - it was my second time seeing girls against boys in a period of time. they are quite good live and i've loved their music for years. and i got to talk with scott mccloud afterwards. and i remembered when "super-fire" was released as a single. i saw the video for it on 120 minutes. that show was so incredibly responsible for my growth in music. that was when i first heard them and i went out and bought the album. and i felt so incredibly cool when i listened to that record. i went to a party that a friend was throwing. and i tried to convince them to play "thekindamzkyoulike" from house of gvsb and they wouldn't do it. there were moments. cos i never felt that cool or great in high school. and listening to that album...i felt capable of suave. of cool. of sex. and sexiness. even though some of those things are never to be mine (for good reason) and others wouldn't come for some time. so i told scott mccloud..how much that record meant to me. cos it helped me feel cool for the first time. and the best part is..he didn't seem to take it as a joke. he seemed to understand what i meant. and he smiled and said thanks. and i appreciated that. onward. j's indie/rock mayhem - 16th april 2003 Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show" > Radiohead - "There there." [the new single. came in today, so immediately got added.] Moving Units - "Between Us and Them" Pretty Girls Make Graves - "Speakers Push the Air" [we got this new cd in of the muder city devils' final live show, so it made me think to play these guys who were on my top 25 records of 2002 list.] Jurassic 5 - "Remember His Name" > Rotary Downs - "Rev. Percy" ['rotary downs have made a better malkmus record than malkmus.' well..maybe. but they're a bit apart. still, really good.] White Stripes - "Black Math" [by request, i assure you. heh. this is an okay song, but i don't play them on my show. they're getting enough play elsewhere.] Tripping Daisy - "I Got a Girl" [i stumbled upon i am an elastic firecracker back in the stacks and couldn't resist. of all the key things we're missing at qfs because of stolen items, at least we have all four tripping daisy albums still. and i mean that in all seriousness.] Sleater-Kinney - "Step Aside" [rock.] > Verbena - "All the Saints" [from their new EP, ..is the alabama boys choir. their full length drops next month.] > at this juncture, a dj from WUAG whom i had met at the kickball game on sunday called in. she told me she dug my show and since we had discussed failure at some length on sunday, she asked if i could play some. sure, i said. so i located their album comfort only to find that some jackass had stolen the cd but left the case. then i found a 45 single of earlier songs, but was thwarted yet again when both sides skipped and wouldn't play. so all this happened quasi-on-the-air. at least, the vinyl part did. so i was forced to do a small voice break to explain. sheesh. > Cody Chesnutt - "Upstarts in a Blowout" [i've been trying to change up which songs i play off this record every week, but since i had to grab it on short notice, i went with one i knew. great song.] El Guapo - "Underground" Faraquet - "Cut Self Not" [by request. my UAG friend called back and since failure..well...failed, requested this tidy little band instead. back to back dischord bands can never be bad.] Merle Haggard - "Always Late (with your kisses)" [a faithful interpretation of that lefty frizzel classic, from his roots, vol. 1 album of covers.] > Uncle Tupelo - "Factory Belt" [from the no depression re-issue out on columbia. they've re-issued their first three albums and the bonus material is snazzy as well. finally, some well deserved respect for a legendary band.] Yo La Tengo - "Summer of the Shark" [from their new album, summer sun.] Deathray Davies - "I Regret the Day I Tried to Steal Daniel's Ego" [from a surprisingly explosive and really, really good album called midnight at the black nail polish factory that we just got in today.] Evan Dando - "Hard Drive" [hey, he finally made it. the long fabled solo album from the ex-lemonhead. not that shabby.] > The Thorns - "Runaway Feeling" [this is the new quasi-supergroup featuring matthew sweet, pete droge and shawn mullins. not a bad piece of 70s pop genius. big star is all over the damn thing, along with seals and crofts and any other number of so-bad-they-have-to-influence-good-things music.] Talking Heads - "Road to Nowhere" Lucinda Williams - "Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings" [you rule, lucinda.] Placebo - "Sleeping with Ghosts" [the title track of their brilliant new album.] > Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - "Vanessa From Queens" World Leader Pretend - "Flow" Birddog - "Beaches" the Stone Roses - "Sally Cinnamon" [..you're my world.] > Supergrass - "Grace" The Clean - "Big Soft Punch" Happy Mondays - "Kinky Afro" [that song rules. the mondays rule.] > Mandatory 'Mats - The Replacements - "Go" thanks for listening. posted by J.
