Thursday, May 22, 2003 np: nothin'. i haven't been listening to any music in my room. but lately at school i was that way as well. i mostly just listen in the car. or when i'm really in the mood for something. tonight i went and met my friend kaya. we've been talkin' on line for quite awhile and though she lives in charlotte, we'd never met. so, her birthday being today (thursday) i offered to take her out to eat, her choice of place. on the ride down, i listened to another side of bob dylan cos i'd had "all i really wanna do" stuck in my head for days. the way he half-yodel/half-falsettos his voice in the chorus always makes me smile. i picked her up at her house, met her brother-in-law (nice guy) and we left. it was an awfully rainy night for may in charlotte, so the driving was a bit trecherous but after she thoroughly sent us the wrong way, we eventually arrived at the penguin drive-in right off central ave. towards downtown. i popped in q and not u's different damage for the ride to the restaurant. although it was turned down sort of low so as to be conducive to conversation. a brilliant album though. central ave. is getting down to an interesting area of town where the run-down and the hipster areas collide. which is why restaurants like the penguin do well here. tattoo parlors, scene accoutrement shops, etc. there's a place called boris and natasha's where kaya bought this rather rad necklace that had a metal necktie shaped ornament. i showed her how she ought to 'straighten' the knot. funny stuff. the veggie burger i had at this place was flat out one of the best i've ever had. all of the sandwiches either come 'all the way' or 'southern' style, so naturally i went with the latter which includes veggie chili, cole slaw, mustard and onions. (for the carnivores amongst you, the beef chili is standard; the veggie you have to request) the fries were excellent as well and the coup de gras was the sweet tea. if a place has good sweet tea, it already has its hooks in me. but this just cemented the deal. a great jukebox too. high marks on this joint. for the ride over to kaya's sister's place of employment (coffee shop) i subjected her to uncle tupelo's no depression which is totally not her style. i tried to force her into a sing along on the carter family rave-up "no depression" but she just laughed at me instead. the coffee shop was very nice (unfortunately i didn't note the name) and kaya's sister (mally? i think that's correct) was funny if nothing else. plus, portishead was playing as we entered; the verve as we left. kaya hijacked the cd player for the ride back to her house and loaded pinkerton in and we had a grand ol' time singing rather loudly to several songs. i hung out for just a bit and then left about midnight. for the ride back, i selected the cash brothers' how was tomorrow? which i adore very, very much. if only cos it starts off with a beautifully harmonic lament ("well i'm standin' at the raceway..and i got dust in my hair..") only by track three to wind up at possibly the best ode to particular album ever. i was sitting at the red light at SR-16/brookshire frwy. waiting to turn onto 85 to head home when this song came on. and sitting at a red light while this song plays is so perfect, it defies explination. ("well it seems as though this light will never turn green..") "nebraska" is such a perfect song, it's incredible. nada surf did alright with "blonde on blonde" on their new let go album, but this trumps it in spades. any song to namecheck the nebraska album is stellar enough. but the song is perfect on its own. i've raved about it on here before, but it never stops amazing me. the cash brothers are forever in my heart for that reason. and that is how music guided my evening. posted by J.
