Sunday, May 04, 2003 np: saturday's democratic presidential candidate debate in south carolina. didn't hear about it? yeah, neither did a lot of folk. it ran, finally, on c-span tonight. it was only broadcast live within the beltway. surprised? i'm not. so on thursday night i went to see wilco. and it's hard sometimes to explain what kind of effect music can have on me. it chooses odd times to come up on me in the way that it did on thursday. i can recall very specific points: hearing paul westerberg do possibly the best version of "swinging party" i've ever heard, hearing glen phillips (and subsequently toad as well) do "i will not take these things for granted," hearing sleater-kinney do "the size of our love"...oh, woops. that's right. they don't seem to want to play it live. bastards. or at least, not when i've seen them. same with "get up." although b. claims she's seen them play it. i don't believe her. it's like people who say wyoming exists. they're just part of the conspiracy. there were two songs that made me smile uncontrolably at the wilco show. when they played "pick up the change" from a.m. and when they played "new madrid" from uncle tupelo's anodyne album. which means i've now seen both wilco and son volt play songs from anodyne live. i am a lucky, lucky man. so, here's a mostly complete song list (in no order) of the wilco show: opening song - "one by one" (from mermaid avenue vol. 1) the rest: "pick up the change," "casino queen," "misunderstood," "far, far away," "monday," "outtasite (outta mind)," "red-eyed and blue," "i got you (at the end of the century)," "sunken treasure," "i am trying to break your heart," "war on war," "jesus etc.," "heavy metal drummer," "i'm the man who loves you," "poor places," "handshake drugs," "bob dylan's 49th beard," "california stars," "laminated cat" (from the loose fur album), a new song (whose name i forget) and a couple of covers i didn't recognize. the set is missing a few songs here and there..but two of the highlights included how they ran "red-eyed and blue" and "i got you (at the end of the century" into one another, just like on being there. and then the rockin'est highlight of the show was "monday" run into "outtasite (outta mind)" just like on being there, but then, run into "casino queen" from a.m. which was absolutely thrilling. seeing a band that means that much to you, seeing a band whose music has done nothing but thrill and excite you, seeing a band who could put that big of a smile on my face by just standing up there and singing two songs. i can't explain to you what i was like to hear jeff tweedy sing "ah, honey, help me pick up the change," or "come on do what you did, roll me under new madrid.." i'm sure you've felt something similar. and i'm sure i will again. posted by J.
