Thursday, May 08, 2003 np: sunday morning coming down. i've told and re-told this story enough, so i won't bore anyone with the details again. but needless to say i had a very, very big scare that ruined all of yesterday for me. it was enough to make me feel on the edge of breaking down. but luckily..again..it was okay. i come through frazzled..but renewed. and of course..even through all of that..nothing could diminish the glee i had playing my radio show last night. it was the final one of the year so i did a two-hour replacements retrospective, which people seemed to really appreciate given the influx of phone calls i got. the rundown (naturally): j's indie/rock mayhem - 7th may 2003 Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show" > The Replacements - "Takin' a Ride," "Kiss Me On the Bus," "Unsatisfied (live)," and "Within Your Reach." [i started with the first track from their first album, 1981's sorry ma, forgot to take out the trash and moved forward. the last time i did a replacements show, i went in rough chronological order. this time, i jumped all around. the live version of "unsatisfied" is from the live at the lingere bootleg which is from the same tour as the maxwell's live show from the tim tour that seems to be quasi famous as one of their better ones.] > The Replacements - "I Will Dare," "Can't Hardly Wait (Tim Version)," "Talent Show (live)," and "Gimme Noise" ["i will dare" constitutes one of the most perfect pop songs ever. the tim version of "can't hardly wait" is a gem that popped up on the all for nothing/nothing for all two-cd set a few years back. the album version, of course, comes from pleased to meet me, but this version comes from before bob stinson left the band and it really sounds like it. it's an awesome version of what's already a classic song. the live version of "talent show" is from one of their infamous tour dates opening for tom petty on their 1989 tour.] > The Replacements - "Alex Chilton," "Sadly Beautiful," "Customer" and "Another Girl, Another Planet (live)" [the replacements' triumphant ode to an idol, "alex chilton" is one of the best rock and roll songs ever put to tape. it's impossible not to see why it is so great. "sadly beautiful" comes from their oddly cobbled final album, all shook down, "customer" from the aforementioned sorry ma,.. and "another girl, another planet" is a cover of the only ones' classic song. this version is from the second disc of the all for nothing/nothing for all collection.] > The Replacements - "I'll Be You," "Date to Church," "September Gurls (live)" and "Skyway" ["i'll be you" has that dubious distinction of being the replacements' only top 40 single ever. it was #40. it's a great song though. from their 1989 album don't tell a soul which i tend to agree with paul westerberg's take on the album. it's over produced. but beneath all that was possibly some of the best songs he'd ever written. "date to church" was the b-side to "i'll be you" and is a really great revved up song featuring tom waits on organ and backing vocals. the live version of "september gurls" is from the aforementioned show with tom petty. again, nodding to alex chilton with this cover of one of big star's best pop songs. finally, the beautiful "skyway" from pleased to meet me.] > The Replacements - "Color Me Impressed," "Kick Your Door Down," "Swingin Party" ["color me impressed" always easily is in my top 5 replacements' song list. it's from their 1983 album hootenanny and the difference between that album and its predecessors is immediately noticeable in this song. it also contains one of my favourite 'mats lyrics of all time: "givin' you their word, 'cause that's all that they won't keep." "kick your door down" was a request, from sorry ma,.... "swingin party" was totally re-invested with energy for me after hearing paul westerberg play it solo last year. it's an amazing song. from their 1985 album tim] Paul Westerberg - "Eyes Like Sparks" [another request. this is from his latest solo album, stereo/mono] > The Replacements - "Sixteen Blue" [from their obnoxiously brilliant let it be. chan poling of the oft overlooked suburbs plays piano on this beautiful song.] Perfect - "Alternative Monkey" [tommy stinson's second band after the demise of the 'mats. this is from their sole release, an ep called when squirrels play chicken] The Replacements - "All Shook Down" [the title track from their final album. a great, quiet number.] Chris Mars - "Reverse Status" [from his first of four solo albums, horseshoes and hand grenades. he writes some really catchy stuff.] > The Replacements - "Kids Don't Follow" and "Bastards of Young" ["kids.." is from their quasi-hardcore EP stink which was their attempt to compete with husker dü, which although turned up a nice record, the humor and winking-nudging is what most pervades the album. although, the stunning "go" was the first hint that westerberg may be more than what he'd let onto as a songwriter. "bastards of young" is just a classic anthem that ranks high, high in the rock and roll cannon.] Paul Westerberg - "2 Days 'Til Tomorrow" [another request. also from the stereo/mono album.] Slim Dunlap - "Girlfriend" [slim was the 'mats second lead guitarist. he's quite a solid songwriter in his own right as is witnessed to by his two solo albums. "girlfriend" is just a funny, rocking song that best sums up what's fun about his writing.] > The Replacements - "Achin to Be" and "Portland" ["achin to be" was the other single off of don't tell a soul, a lovely portrait song. "portland" was recorded during those same sessions, as is actually a sister song to "talent show" (sharing the line "it's too late to turn back, here we go.."). it's from the all for nothing/nothing for all collection.] Paul Westerberg - "Things" [from his first solo album, 14 songs, a beautiful break up song that is so full of longing regret and resignment that it's lovely to hear.] The Replacements - "Answering Machine" [from let it be, it's just paul with a guitar and some percussion from chris. very little else. an amazing song.] > The Replacements - "Left of the Dial" [i figured it fitting to close with this tribute to radio. i cranked it up just a little bit louder than i should've. i love pushing the needle in the red when i'm up there. this song is usually what comes to mind when i think of what my favourite 'mats song is. i love it. unflinchingly.] thanks for listening. posted by J.
