Monday, May 05, 2003 np: the warm glow of the lamp. i know lately all this blog seems to be is playlists from my shows. so here's another one. ali and i went up and did the 2am - 4am slot tonight, just to be fun. i had this cd that we got in called 2-minute Danger Theatre which are these 2 minute short radio dramas that are parodies of the old style ones. they're really funny cos they go out of their way to make jokes, etc. so at the beginning of each block we played the next exciting adventure, getting through all seven chapters of the voice by the end. good times. we had fun. tonight's show was called "the late-night hootenanny: with sammy and veronica." my accent was amusing. onward: the late-night hootenanny with sammy and veronica - 5th may 2003 Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show" > Yo La Tengo - "Georgia Vs. Yo La Tengo" Steely Dan - "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" [played as a quasi-nod to wilco, who covered this song for the me, myself and irene soundtrack. i still don't understand why, but that entire soundtrack was just people covering steely dan songs. oh, well.] the Melvins - "The Brain Center at Whipples" [by request. great song from their hostile ambient takeover album.] El Guapo - "Underground" > Iron Maiden - "The Trooper" [my favourite maiden song. ever.] Eleni Mandell - "Refrain" [from her slowly-really-growing-on-me country for true lovers album.] REM - "Driver 8" [all i brought up with me tonight was my entire vinyl collection, so i pulled this off of fables of the reconstruction] Heatmiser - "Flame!" [ali, being an elliot smith fan, pulled this out.] > Bruce Springsteen - "I'm On Fire" [i could go into the long story about why this song is an inside joke, but i won't. instead, i'll just re-iterate the fact that the boss rules. and so does this song.] Bob Dylan - "Boots of Spanish Leather" [there's a place in my life for this song..for me to play it to someone. it'll come someday. and it'll be just right.] Lucinda Williams - "Those Three Days" ['did you only want me for those three days?..did you love me forever, just for those three days?'] Jesus and Mary Chain - "Just Like Honey" > the B 52s - "6060-842" Andrew W.K. - "Don't Stop Living In the Red" Spoon - "Take a Walk" [by request. great band, that spoon.] Big Star - "Holocaust" [pulled off the a little big star compilation, but originally from third/sister lovers] > Echo and the Bunnymen - "Going Up" Iris Dement - "Hotter than Mojave in my Heart" [this kickstarted the country theme we went with for the rest of the show, largely. i'm still sad i had to miss iris dement to see wilco, but c'est le vie.] The Replacements - "Hootenanny" [hey..seemed fitting given the name of our show.] Uncle Tupelo - "No Depression" > Dolly Parton - "Cash on the Barrelhead" [her version wasn't bad. i'd only ever heard gram parsons cover of it before.] Willie Nelson - "Georgia on My Mind" Merle Haggard - "Take These Chains From My Heart" Johnny Cash - "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" [a set of country covers.] > Sinead O'Conner - "Nothing Compares 2 U" M. Ward - "Let's Dance" Placebo - "Johnny and Mary" the Ramones - "Needles and Pins" [a set of other covers. fun.] i've got another couple of years, but i'm really going to miss being a dj at qfs. the group of people (mostly community djs) who are the regulars up there are the craziest, most off the wall, random bunch of people. and i love it. they hold all sorts of different jobs, come from all different places, argue incessently about music and can't agree with eachother a lick. but they're all family. and i love being a part of that. i mean..take mad dog for instance. whom i've been friends with since freshman year. calling me up last sunday to take me out to brunch at revival grill across the street. and paying. at a really nice restaurant. i was really touched. or even noel. stupid, largely annoying and problematic noel, who took the time to sew me a pillow with the new wqfs t-shirt design on it. which was one of the sweetest things i've ever gotten. and how could i hold anything against her after that? if there's one thing i've really learned in the last year..it's that if you stop judging immediately..people will surprise you. they may not, but a lot of times, people come through in ways that show that they're genuine people. i'm not just talking about people who buy me lunch or sew me things. people who're just..good people. and i realized that as much as i get angry and yell at the administration here..and as much as i'm constantly at odds with their policies..they have the same intentions i do: the betterment of this school. that doesn't mean i'm going to back off and play nice. but it does mean i can respect where they're coming from. when you get to that point..i think you've made the most important leap. and consensus..and change is possible. posted by J.
