Friday, July 04, 2003 np: the new york dolls - "trash" i had "chatterbox" stuck in my head all day at work and now look what you've done to me? i hauled out the self-titled album as well. damn the new york dolls were fun. in some weird, alternate way..it makes perfect sense that their lead singer went on to become (and really..wasn't he always?) buster poindexter. before i get into a few things, head on over to my friend j. ball's blog and check out his most recent post. it's a great look into the entertainment industry's continued subjugation of minorities (in this case, homosexual men) by painting 'friendly stereotypes.' much in the same way that white people were comfortable with blacks in films as long as they played "butlers and maids, slaves and hoes" (props to big daddy kane for that), homosexual men are relegated to their own dimension of city-hip, white, affluent, superficial trend-hoppers. i could go on about this for quite a bit myself, but jeremy does a good job of laying it all out. so go read. all these ideas are swimming about my head for songwriting..and i'm afraid of starting recording before i let it all work its way out. so maybe i'm better off in (yet again) putting off the recording of the new record. but this time, only until the fall. a lot of things have happened recently that have really given me ideas of storytelling. and with a song i wrote back in may ("this february romance of ours") that was directly inspired by the demise of a relationship (not mine, mind you), more things have leaped up to bite me in a influential manner. with the bush administration's attempts to further relegate the 40 hour work week to the dustbin of history, i thought it important that i wax political about something i'll be experiencing tomorrow. that is: working on a federal holiday with no overtime pay and no benefits. my bookstore (books-a-million) has me working tomorrow (july 4th), a federally recognized holiday, with no overtime pay. and at best the meagre promise of purchasing my dinner for the day. is this fair? no. why? federally recognized holidays are holidays, damnit. and if i work one, my employer should be required to compensate me for working on such a day. new years eve and new years day? overtime. memorial day? overtime. fourth of july? overtime. i've worked all of these holidays in the past for this store and have never seen anything more than some pizza that was kinda cold by the time i got to take my break to go back and eat some. fair? you bet your sweet bippy its not. so with it being the fourth, i need to create some sort of way to protest while working. american flag pin upside down? i certainly think we're a country in peril at the moment. hell, pirates occupy the white house! maybe i'll just refuse to sell any copies of ann coulter's new book. but i'll leave you guys..with this: "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." President Dwight D. Eisenhower April 16, 1953 and to prove it..go here. and prepare to get angry. happy independence day, guys. and god bless you all. here's to an america free from tyranny, free from want, free from fear and destruction. to a better land. that we call our own. posted by J.
