Saturday, July 05, 2003 np: josh rouse - under cold blue stars josh has a new album coming out..next month? it's really soon, that's all i know. plus, is the new jay farrar out now? has anyone heard it? no depression gave it a pretty choice review, so i'm looking forward to hearing it. plus..jesus. someone i know had an album reviewed in ND recently. the avett brothers (scott and seth? i think is right) have a great album out. i've known seth via my friend anne for quite some time. and he and his brother are remarkable musicians. it's really awesome to hear them getting noticed. plus, they have a song called "pretty girl from locust" and anyone from around concord will find that a hoot and a half. so, this is the point in my journal where i go off about something that made me feel overly emotional in one way or another. so bear with me. i was sitting out in a backyard in salisbury tonight around a bonfire (how i stood it in this heat, i've no idea) and drinking beer. i was stuffed, absolutely fully, from a tremendous amount of food that had been prepared by a co-worker of mine at the bookstore. it was a marvelous fourth feast. and as i was sitting digesting all of that, both gastro-intestinally and mentally, surrounded by lovely people and a lovely evening, i went off into one of those ponderously quaker moods of mine. i'm a lucky man. and we were all lucky people. we are sitting in a gloriously free land, eating gloriously free food (well, free for me..i didn't pay. heh) with gloriously free friends. and this sounds like a glorious bunch of bullshit. but it's true. and i feel very lucky to be who i am and where i am and how i am. i've done some bad things in my time, some good things too. but all cos i could. and i could dredge up the problems that arise from me sitting about like this tonight. the problems with the meat industry's treatment of animals, the near constant warfare in other countries, the mass human rights violations that go on..all while i stuff myself. but the most important thing..in celebrating my ability to feel so good this evening..is that part of the burden of being that free, is having the duty to look out for anyone who doesn't enjoy the same things. to look out for the betterment of mankind. this is all starting to ramble and sound lame. but the bottom line is..tomorrow's another day. you can make a difference. you are an agent of change. and damnit, if you don't do something to make this world an even infintismally better place tomorrow..you better fix that the next day. or it'll all catch up to you. sooner. than. later. posted by J.
