listen
to the opry
maybe
they'll sing my song
lord
my heart all a'flutter
faron
my darling, where've you gone?
mama
always sang me down
listen
to her golden voice so sweet
velvet
around my broken heart
faron
my darling, where've you gone?
came to me
some endless dream
of loving you.
smile at me
let me sleep
my way to you.
driving
to new orleans
maybe
she'll be there
lord
my heart, my only one
faron
my darling, please be true
faron
my darling, please be you.

blood meridian is a violent novel. to say the least. and the quote on the front that speaks of the novel's theme as 'regeneration through violence' is fairly on the mark. i just can't decide whose regeneration. the longer the main characters go on living, the more appalled by them i become. it's odd that the book's starting character (the one it seemed to focus on) has blended in (obviously very purposefully) into a larger group with main characters stepping out for their monologues amongst the chorus. the harsh tones of the novel (whether it's violence, racism, nihilism, &c) have worn me down. ground me. i would type out this one passage in particular that i read today..but it's a shade long for right now. but it perfectly captures the mood. racism, needless violence and then..everyone returns to basic urges, ignoring what goes on about them.
cormac mccarthy is an amazing writer. and this book is superb. if only because i now have an even better understand of precisely how far we as a human race have come.
