Sunday, July 27, 2003 np: blackalicious - blazing arrow hmm..i went awhile without posting. i'm not sure why precisely. but i didn't feel up to task. tomorrow (monday) marks a special anniversary regarding my writing. and i'll deal with it then. i've been listening quite a bit lately to blackalicious' amazing blazing arrow. it is an album that constantly reveals itself to you with each listen. very much in the way that layers and layers peel off at your feet. only to reveal much more than you had anticipated. and it's a beautiful entity. i've also been revisiting jurassic 5's power in numbers since the time is drawing nigh on their show at the cat's cradle. (aug. 2nd) and i'm terribly excited to finally see one of the bands that truly makes me feel good about music. since last post i have finished carter beats the devil and found it most excellent. in true, magical fashion, where i thought i had it nailed down, it utterly surprised me by the finish. which was fantastic. now i am reading a collection of short stories by luis rodriguez called the republic of east l.a. rodriguez is a writer and activist who spent a great deal of his life living in east los angeles in what is predominantly a latino community. his writing in this book (and indeed, in a lot of his works) focuses on the lives and plight of the working class/low-income latino communities in california. and while not all of his stories plumb the depths of emotion quite as handily as others, much like some of my favourite songwriters, when he's on, he's on. and i mean really, really on. i finished up what will probably be my last working stint at books-a-million yesterday. and it was very sad. having surrounded myself there with, really, a family of really good people, it's hard to know that i won't be working that closely with many of them again. having made wonderful friends again with dave (once my high school peer and then my boss), dayna (how often do you get a chance to truly be friends with the general manager of a place you work?), andy, belinda, t.j., kat, west, takiyah, heather, rhonda, etc. etc. i am blessed. and despite being fed up with customers and such at certain points, i certainly never fully dreaded going into work cos i always knew i had compatriots in arms beside me. and for two and a half years, from the day after thanksgiving in 2000, to the 25th day of july in 2003, during each summer and every christmas and even a few days during a spring break once, it was my job. and sitting on friday nights at friday's. beer in my hand. and a smile on my face. erased every day that week that had ever had me down. and it was alright again. to my friends. posted by J.
