Wednesday, August 20, 2003 np: interpol - turn on the bright lights so it's wednesday night. tomorrow, 21st august, is my 22nd birthday. hoorah. kind of uneventful and the majority of it is going to be spent either at school or in class. but i will not gripe. i am alive. and i am aware enough to be enraged by many things that go on. and for that i am sincerely grateful. but all the same, buying me things is nice. like this: but really, if you just sign the haloscan and wish me a happy birthday i'll be grateful. of course, if you sign the haloscan and say you bought me something..even better. heh. oh, if you do, do sign the guestbook and let me know what you bought, so i can remove the link and so others who might buy will know. anyone who does buy anything through amazon links on my site (whether as presents for me or not) i am very thankful of that. it does give me kickbacks that help out a struggling, un-paid student teacher. the updates will be coming more frequently. there will be a lot to talk about student teaching wise. already on the ajenda is the fact that my CT (co-operating teacher) hasn't seen any IEPs for the exceptional kids in our regular english 12 class of yet. IEPs are the forms that are a diagnosis of what special needs an EC child might need within a classroom. for instance: if he/she needs tests read out loud to them, if they need extra time on tests/assignments, if an inclusion teacher is needed in the classroom each day to help them, and so on. technically, teachers are responsible for making sure that each student's IEP is followed and carried out in the course of the curriculum. and if things don't happen, the teacher can be held accountable. but how do you follow these things if you don't see them? my CT answered that, unfortunately, this is routine. we're supposed to see them, but more likely than not, you won't. seeing as how we only received our final class rosters on the friday before students returned on monday, this really doesn't surprise me. so with schools already pressed for resources already, do we leave no child behind? right. not with the support of the current administration who believes that teachers should be held to strict accountability measures and strict licensure qualifications, yet refuses to help out teachers on loan amnesty, higher pay, better employment benefits and so on. i'm not saying that holding teachers to tough standards isn't the right thing to do. certainly, making sure only qualified personnel are teaching your kids is important. but it forms a catch-22. people aren't attracted to the job because of low pay, etc. schools are forced to hire people without education degrees and simply degrees in their teaching field. bush wants to hire more teachers. but he also wants to make it tougher to hire the simple quorum of teachers necessary to make a school function since no one in their right mind would want to teach for so little pay and so little support. it's a mad house. and now to bed. to wake. and soldier on. why? cos i'm not in my right mind. and i love it. posted by J.
