Monday, September 01, 2003 np: josh ritter - hello starling more to come about that gem in a bit. first off, to celebrate labor day (thanks to both atrios and kos for the tips), please go check out this entry over at nathan newman's website. nathan seems to be one of the blogging community's most informed voices on labor and unionization and this post in particular is worth reading. the new josh ritter album arrived for my review at the station. and i'd like to give it a few more listens before i dissect it on here, but rest assured it is quite, quite good. different enough, i believe, from the sparse and beautiful golden age of radio to champion it simultaneously as a continuation of fine songwriting form and a step forward in style. but we'll see. i'll break it down more later. i also want to do a review of the new josh rouse. it has settled in quite nicely and i was very, very excited to see that all music finally deemed one of his albums worthy of breaking the 4 star barrier. all of his prior records had netted him a solid 4 star rating, which for any artist to be consistantly receiving such high marks from their debut album forward is great. but 1972 comes in with a fantastic 4 1/2 star rating. but i'll elaborate on that later also. and to prove how much of a geek of an english teacher i can be sometimes..inspired by the iliad, i wrote a piece the other day. "a death in the family" old king priam watch out for me you spot the stars you know the sea and i, your son can barely breathe in the dust of earth and no reprieve. old king priam my destiny not within walls, by carrion breeze to draw these dogs these kites to me in the dust of earth and no reprieve. old king priam give flame, give heat give all you own my dignity my head is blackened and heavy with the dust of earth come cover me. come cover me for love of god come cover me. i want to play some soon. i need to play out. and perform. and get this ache from off my chest. i've never missed performing quite so much. especially because i think i'm doing good work of late. or at least..i'm writing things that satisfy me quite a bit. and that's been missing for awhile. here's hoping that it continues. please comment with what you think about that piece. and be specific, be truthful, be critical. that's what i need most. posted by J.
