np: depeche mode - violator

well, weather, that had conspired to grandly hand me this day off from student teaching, has pulled the bait and switch. as a result of the hurricane, the roots did not make the drive down tonight. and they rescheduled the show for next thursday. the same night as the lucinda williams/jayhawks show. now, normally the question would be: okay, who haven't you seen? and the answer would be: the roots. i've seen lucinda once and the jayhawks three times prior. however, my tickets to lucinda were a gift for my birthday so i need to use them. plus the person who bought them for me might be going with me. and she's never seen either lucinda or the jayhawks. so that's my decision. we'll see how much of a pain in the ass it is getting a refund from ticketmaster online.

i did not do the 2am - 4am slot tonight as you can tell by the date. and i will most likely not be at my show next friday because of the wedding. so the next scheduled radio show will be friday, october 3rd. i always get depressed when i have to go this long without doing a show. especially since i've only done one this year. it'll get better.

i've been absorbing random things left and right. i'm reading things both personal and work related. so i have recently completed reading or am in the process of reading the following: macbeth, oedipus rex and oedipus at colonus, the stranger, heart of darkness, lies and the lying liars that tell them, farewell, my lovely and "the shadow out of time." the first five of those are things i'm reading/re-reading to teach to my kids. the last three are my personal choices.

first off, the al franken book (lies and the lying liars..) was as funny as i expected. what surprised me was how dead on and serious it was as well. to those with a left-leaning bias, i would recommend it. or if you just have something against any of the following persons: bill o'reilly, ann coulter, sean hannity and the entirety of the bush administration.

farewell, my lovely is the second book i've been reading by raymond chandler. i got into chandler by having him mentioned to me one too many times and also by a swank re-printing of all his books recently undertaken by vintage publishing. reading chandler is like stepping straight into a noir film, no questions. and it will seem cliché at first. but then you realize that chandler invented this genre. and you marvel at just how creative it really is. hardboiled detective novels have never been better.

and then "the shadow out of time." h.p. lovecraft gets his due through writers like bradbury and so forth. but for one of the unequivocal masters of the american horror story, he is widely unknown in the general public. he certainly doesn't generate the driving devotion that edgar a. poe has and does. which is a shame given how incredible his writing is to behold. this short story especially is breathtaking. the plot itself is genius and i'll leave it to you to go read it. which you should.

my copy of moby dick is currently residing beside my bed. i think it should always be there.

--

fifty-nine degrees
and blustery.
all these summers leaves
disheartening.

is there paralytic phrase to describe
the way i seize you up.
was there motion in the water when i
tried to cease.
seas beneath me.

my natural bouyancy is just a trick.
i'm really drowning when you think i'm walking.
if my sandals give the illusion of flight
take heed, take heed.

were i was cloaked from head to toe
in my finest pyrrich robes.
this at least, i know.
is true.

this at least, i know.
i beg of you.
