Monday, September 22, 2003 np: the smiths - "there is a light that never goes out" i was rummaging about in my cassettes. searching for which cure albums i own since a friend of mine has so graciously offered to burn me a few. and i stumbled upon two tapes i knew i had, yet had forgotten were so readily available. specifically, the smiths' the queen is dead and david bowie's the rise and fall of ziggy stardust. both i purchased at very cheap prices and i'd forgotten that i actually really rather liked the smiths. who knew? especially the song that's playing now. speaking of the cure, i talked about "killing an arab" today in class since my tenth graders are reading the stranger. in case you didn't know..."killing an arab" is about the climax scene of camus' classic novel. interestingly enough, recent copies of the cure singles collection, staring at the sea, have a warning sticker on the cover. they point out that "killing an arab" is in no way meant to incite violence against those of arab descent. a cruel reminder of our flagging world awareness. i should note that raymond chandler is a genius. i touched on that in the last post, but i shall never stop flogging him as a mastermind of american literature. i started teaching heart of darkness today with my ap kids. and i opened them up with one of my very, very favourite t.s. eliot poems, "the hollow men." the two lines that preceed the poem are a) an allusion to a line from heart of darkness and b) an allusion to guy fawkes day respectively. the poem is downright brilliant. and haunting. there are lines that tear me apart. and as an introduction to one of the major themes that haunt heart of darkness, it can't be beat. my favourite idea about the novel is that beginning in marlowe's "whited sepulchre" of paris, his trip to the congo and down the river to the inner station is a parallel of dante and virgil's descent through hell in the divine comedy. i'm going to think on this more and post about it to annoy you at a later date. if you've never heard the church, now is a good time. go listen to starfish or heyday and revel in them. you will be gorgeous by association. as if you aren't already. posted by J.
