np: huzzah!

i'm taking a moment out of shamelessly hawking amazon for charity and railing about my favourite albums of the year to share with you all a moment of personal joy that happened today.

this semester has been somewhat of a nightmare for the kids in my classes. i took over teaching them a scant five weeks ago after their main teacher took a medical leave at the end of the first nine weeks. suffering through endless subs that weren't licensed english teachers and tired and distraught english department members who were struggling to try and give these kids a chance at passing their state end of course exams, it has not been a good experience for them.

i came in, set to work and hoped for the best. i had two classes that would be taking the state English I EOC (an honors and a regular 9th grade class). my hope was that the carnage wouldn't be too terrible

the results came in today. state EOC's are measured on a scale of 1 - 4. 3s and 4s are definitely preferred. they show a competent mastery of the material and can range from a C to an A in grade. 2s represent a D and 1s represent a failing grade.

my honors class came back with nothing but 3s and 4s. ranging from an 82 to a 94, they all showed mastery on the state level.

the true test was the regular course.

only three of my students failed the state exam. that is something you can expect out of some classes that have had a consistant teacher all year. i am so tickled pink. you can't even imagine the smile on my face right now. and these kids that have caused me so much stress and so much hair-pulling over the past five weeks..

i want to hug every single one of them. and tell them how proud i am. and how no matter how mad i got and how i might have yelled at times just to gain control in the classroom...

all that time. i was pulling for them. i wanted it for them so much.

today is the day i feel justified as a teacher. this is one of the best days of my life. huzzah.
