Thursday, December 25, 2003 np: the nitty gritty dirt band - will the circle be unbroken a lovely smattering of gifts from all over. the album just mentioned, for instance, along with woody guthrie's the asch recordings vol. 1 - 4 which i have craved for years. for those of you who have ever contacted me via instant messenger and been subjected to an explanation of my screen name, then you are already aware of my adoration of messr. guthrie. he was the absolute representation of an ideal that has been seen as non-existant for the past few decades; namely, that of the spiritual leftist. today, if one were a fairly steadfast christian (as guthrie was, more or less) then it is assumed that you are a conservative. and if you are of a leftist leaning (socialist, if not borderline communist), then it is assumed that you are agnostic, if not atheist or at least of some 'pagan' religion. now granted, i'm going out on a generalized limb here. but in my mind, ever since letting political ideas begin to take hold, the ideas of christianity (or the ideas of being a true believer in the equality of all persons) are absolutely not at odds with a progressive/leftist agenda. guthrie seemed to see jesus christ as one of the utmost socialists. a person very much dedicated to the idea of equality in all its forms. from one of the oft-removed (and therefore, mostly unknown) verses of "this land is your land": was a big high wall there that tried to stop me that's mainly what i thought about this christmas. that and the year ahead. a big one for a lot of us for various reasons. there's really a lot in the balance in this upcoming period of time. next christmas, when i post here, i'll be either decrying the re-election of bush, or hailing our new chance at progress with the new president elect. or any number of things, really. in the next year, get out there and do lots of small things for one another. be lovely. be human. this whole thing i've been pushing for selling amazon through this site for the Triad Health Project was a very, very small effort on my part, and it generated some profit for a worthy cause. in fact, i'm thinking of making it a permanent addition, working with various worthy, local charities in the triad/north carolina region or on a national level. but in case you were thinking of donating to the Triad Health Project, either purchase something here before 1st january or donate directly to them at their site. if you do that let me know so that i can tally the total we raised and let y'all know. meanwhile, on a highly personal note, two things: first off, i made dean's list for the first (and last) time as a guilford student this past semester. needless to say i was very pleased. i like to go out in style. second, i was officially hired by the high school at which i've been student teaching. i now have a job as a high school English teacher for the state of North Carolina. i'm still kind of unable to stop grinning. it's been a great holiday season. i hope yours has been the same. posted by J.
