the state of the union address was tonight. i won't bother going about rebutting the utter ridiculousness of so much of it. however, i will mention this one shining moment:
when talking about the patriot act, president bush started a sentence with something to the effect of: "this time next year, key provisions of the patriot act will have expired.." and before he could contine with his plea to renew it, the congressional democrats applauded that statement.
i couldn't believe it myself. could it be that for once, the democrats were acting like a true opposition party? i laughed. heartily and long. president bush seemed somewhat thrown off by it, if only momentarily.
these are the moments where i wonder what our republic would be like if our legislative body acted more like british parliament..with its verbal shout-downs and loud, boisterous debate. or even better, like the japanese diet, with its random fistfights.
everything the president outlined in his speech tonight can be rebutted and strongly. it's just going to take an effective, fiery and on target nominee to take him to the wall the way he deserves to be.
