Sunday, February 08, 2004 np: embrace - the good will out how i do enjoy pulling out old mix cds and stumbling upon chewy britpop goodness like this. embrace is no blur, pulp or even oasis, for that matter. but they at least put out one, solid and pleasant album. there's some crazy shit going down in des moines right now. DES MOINES, Iowa -- In what may be the first subpoena of its kind in decades, a federal judge has ordered a university to turn over records about a gathering of anti-war activists. so what does this mean precisely? several of the activists subpoenaed are members of an organization called the catholic peace ministry which has been participating in anti-war/bring the troops home rallies in iowa over the past months. the particular incident in question is a november gathering at drake university. the feds have thus far refused to comment on why precisely these people have been subpoenaed. the des moines register has some additional information about the people served and about the continuing refusal for the fbi's joint terrorism task force to comment on why all this is happening. (thank you kos for all this information.) little is more scary in this world than the normally tin-foil hat/conspiracy nut theories coming to fruition. random people being subpoenaed before a close-door grand jury and the possible threat of some serious jail time (18 months - the length of the grand jury) for not answering questions is heavy, heavy stuff. especially when no one knows why they've been served in the first place. speaking of kos, trapper john hits the nail on the head when it comes to analyzing why bush's stint (or lack thereof) in the national guard is so troubling. bush freely admits (as he did on meet the press this morning) that he got out of the national guard eight months early in order to go to harvard business school. he explains this by saying he "worked it out with the military." since when has the military ever been forgiving on a term of service simply because someone was supposed to be doing something else? in the link to kos, trapper lays out an excellent comparison between bush and what a typical soldier in iraq right now would face trying to pull the same stunt that bush was able to acheive. this is precisely why bush's presidency is so troubling. his whole life has been given to privilege. a life of limitless do-overs (as he has been able to have) and the opportunity to spend nearly the first thirty years of his life doing barely anything of substance. i, and every other every-day, normal american, can not relate to that. nor would i ever want to be able to do so. the grammys are tonight. and also, you can catch a re-run of the president bush interview on meet the press on cnbc (or was it msnbc? one of the two) at 10pm tonight. i'm sure i'll fume at y'all about the grammys tomorrow. like how the fact that it's the 'grammys' really bugs me. grammatical precedent says it ought to be 'grammies,' but who am i to question? posted by J.
