Tuesday, March 09, 2004 np: josh ritter - hello starling well after gushing about this album from the moment i first reviewed it, i finally bought my own copy. it's good to have. here's hoping that mr. ritter is going to be able to stop in at WQFS for the interview i've been angling after. the last time i saw josh ritter was on friday march 14th 2003 in austin, texas. i had hitched a ride with a found friend of mine up to a starbucks in the downtown area. that afternoon, josh ritter, vic chesnutt and liz phair were playing outside. it was a gorgeous austin springtime day. really hot (80 something degrees; hot for a spring day, anyway) and it was my second time seeing josh ritter play. the first having been the previous october in chicago. he was debuting songs from his forthcoming record (the above-linked hello starling) and i have never been so excited for an upcoming record as i was after hearing him and his band tear through "snow is gone" for the first time. (it's still one of my absolute favourite songs by him.) i spoke with josh for a bit afterward. briefly. he and his drummer (and manager), darius, were in a hurry. so i bid him adieu. making him promise he'd look into coming to north carolina for the first time on the album tour. that evening, the accident occurred. you can read the details there. this saturday coming up marks one year since i was very nearly killed. and i consider myself lucky in a lot of ways to be alive. any number of things could've broken any number of directions. in order to celebrate this, my roomate, j. ball, and i decided to throw a party this saturday. we were going to call it the "it's great to be alive" party. just sort of a ridiculous excuse to throw a party we've been meaning to have. but then last evening, while spreading the good word of the hootenanny, i found out that two guilford grads, one who had graduated with me, had been in two classes with me, and whom i thought was a pretty good guy, were in an accident last week. the one i knew was killed. needless to say the whole affair has shifted gears. and so has my state of mind. i don't have much to say about it other than just relating things. sometimes fragility can be such a beautiful thing. and other times, it's too terrible to explain away. this isn't so much about my party, obviously, as it is the random order of the universe sometimes. god speed, david. and take care. posted by J.
