Thursday, March 04, 2004 np: stevie wonder - innervisions today i donated money to john kerry. is he my favourite democratic nominee? not by a long shot. do i think he has the best chance of beating bush? not necessarily. so why donate? the answer is simple. i refuse to spend another four years under bush. kerry is not my ideal president for many reasons (skull and bones, questionable connections to corporate donations, opposition to gay marriage, questionable dedication to the democratic south), but this year is not just any election. i voted for ralph nader in 2000 and have never thought twice about it. i live in a state that often, thanks to the electoral college, makes me feel that my presidential vote is very much disenfranchised. not to mention that my vote for nader didn't even count. write-in votes for nader were not counted in north carolina. but neither would a vote for gore have done any better. swallowed up in a sea of bush supporters, a state that bush carried by 373,000+ votes. in my county alone, bush won with a 2:1 margin. so immediately my thought about my donation to kerry was this: have i given up the idealistic thoughts that led me to vote for nader in 2000? have i become jaded so quickly? this is only my second presidential election afterall. i don't think i have at all. i think those of you who read this site somewhat regularly are privy to how my political thoughts tend to run. they have done little in the way of softening over the past four years. i'm still as vitriolically liberal as i was then. but the stakes have risen. the tide is high. we are prometheus, yet again on the verge of having our organs plucked and devoured by the merciless hawk(s) above us. and then i read things like this (thanks to daily kos as always): With Tuesday’s attacks, Abu Musab Zarqawi, a Jordanian militant with ties to al-Qaida, is now blamed for more than 700 terrorist killings in Iraq. kos sums this up better than my foaming mouth could at the moment: Got that? The administration invented ties between Saddam and Bin Laden to justify its war against an impotent Iraq. Yet it had real, live terrorists in its crosshairs, and refused to pull the trigger. words just aren't there to describe this kind of arrogant behavior. and bush dares to run election commercials showing the falling world trade center and images of wreckage and firemen along with the insulting suggestion that he is a steady leader? you're not steady, george. you're a careless, thoughtless, manevolent fuck. whenever you die, tell nixon and johnson i said hi. cos i'm sure they're both where you're heading. -- on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, i got a ticket to see the twilight singers in carborro. the afghan whigs have slowly become one of my favourite bands of all time. i own not a single bad record by them. and their albums are endlessly fiery, explosive, sleazy and witty. like raymond chandler and curtis mayfield had a child. but since they (like a lot of my other favourite bands) hit their demise some time ago, the twilight singers are the next best thing. they feature former whigs' frontman and principal songwriter, greg dulli. their new album, blackberry belle is breathtaking in spots. it's not the equal of the whigs' gentlemen by any means, but it is a great record. and needless to say, i am thrilled to get to see them. -- now for a bit of (even more) self-indulgence. does anyone else who watched professional wrestling in the late 80s/early 90s remember when sgt. slaughter turned heel and dressed up like an iraqi army general? he had the iraqi manager who took the iraqi flag down to ringside each match. he acted like an american army defector. all this was, of course, during the first gulf war. there was a great feud between hulk hogan (the symbol of america afterall, no? well, i mean, him and hacksaw jim duggan) where he even "blinded" hulk by breathing fire in his face during a backstage ambush. thrilling. but when the war ended, and so did slaughter's run as a heel, he recorded this, dare i say, touching segment in which he begged the WWF fans for forgiveness..and indeed..his country for forgiveness as well. the closing image was sgt. slaughter looking teary eyed up at the statue of liberty and saying, slightly choked: "i want my country back." well, slaughter, after the last three and a half years, i know exactly how you feel. exactly. posted by J.
