Tuesday, March 30, 2004 np: the jayhawks - rainy day music there's a list of musical heroes i've met. these are people for whom i hold some great affection that has lead me to listen to their records repeatedly and espouse them to any and all bent ears in a given vacinity. they include: glen phillips, todd nichols, dean dinning and randy guss (toad the wet sprocket); gary numan; gary louris (the jayhawks); mac mccaughan and laura ballance (superchunk); carrie brownstein (sleater-kinney); josh ritter; josh rouse; peter bruntnell; jim white; chuck d; raka iriscience and dj babu (dilated peoples); chali 2na (jurassic 5); kathleen edwards; hayden; scott mccloud (girls against boys); ian mackaye, guy picciotto, joe lally and brendan canty (fugazi); brett and rennie sparks (the handsome family) and others i'm leaving out i'm sure. and this is turning into some attempt at braggadocio, i realize. but i also wanted to point out how genuinely nice and thoughtful to their fans all these people are. in particular: the handsome family (whose brett sparks took time to speak with me for some twenty minutes before a show), gary numan (read that story here), jim white (who never fails to take time to speak with me on every occasion i've seen him, which is totaling four times now), chuck d (who, granted, had to sit down to dinner with me, but also was incredibly conversational and genuine), josh ritter (easily one of the kindest persons i've met), raka iriscience, chali 2na, all the member of fugazi and kathleen edwards. so, why, josh, are you going on and on about this? well, brynn, i'll tell you. add greg dulli to the list. greg is the former lead singer of the afghan whigs (rapidly climbing into my top five favourite bands of all time list) and has a new band called the twilight singers. they played in chapel hill last evening and though it took awhile to get to speak with him, he was every bit the jovial and sincere person. plus, i got to share with him the story that i also shared with scott mccloud of girls against boys. having grown up a bit of a geek (well, a tremendous one at that), there was never a time i really ever felt cool in any respect. however, there are three bands that no matter how out of it i feel at any one time, listening to them makes me feel suave and sharp and cool. girls against boys (whose house of gvsb has this uncalculable sex to it, as do all their records, but that one in particular for me), pulp (whose jarvis cocker is the poster boy for tall, lanky, geeky men who still manage to ooze appeal out of every pore by seemingly just willing it forward) and now, the afghan whigs. when i told greg this his reply meant a lot: "well, that's really cool. thanks for sharing that with me. i appreciate it." as much as i've managed to get over myself when it comes to talking to musicians lately (feeling infinitely more comfortable in just approaching people), there are still moments where i feel as giddy as that time on august 20th, 1995, when i attended my first concert ever at memorial staidum in charlotte to see my heroes, toad the wet sprocket. i'm glad i don't get them as often anymore. but they're dreadfully nice every now and again, you know. posted by J.
