np: low hum.

a morning like today
when i rise and prepare
in the ways you prefer,
that i sometimes fight.
a nick on my chin.
stiffness of limb.
i take my time.
it's all right.

still when the receiver
gives me shadowy clicks
and barely detectable whirs
that make me think
six hours away
you have answered the ring.
but it is only the innocent sounds
of an inferior connection.

and i am left, as i am most mornings
mooring myself to my outpost
in the upper parts of this building.
unsure of anything but that
by the end of the day
i will ease myself down
to start again tomorrow.

restless. and ready
for you to answer
the phone.
