Friday, April 30, 2004 np: nicolai dunger - soul rush a few quick things.. if you're a greensboro resident, heads up: WXLV, the ABC affiliate in the triad, as the result of a decision by its parent corporation, has decided not to air the episode of nightline scheduled for tonight in which ted koppel will read the names of all 523 u.s. military personnel killed in combat operations since the beginning of the war in iraq. you can read the sinclair broadcasting group's statement on the matter here. they claim koppel's move to be politically motivated and not in viewers' interest. well i say it is in our interest. if you agree, call WXLV at 336-274-4848 and let them know. be polite. but be firm. and let them know that as a viewer you are disappointed in their owners' decision to keep this off the market here in the triad. let them know that you, the viewer, decide what not to see with your remote. it's not their place to decide for you. second, the story about the abu ghraib torture case (where iraqi prisoners were photographed being sexually abused by u.s. soldiers) gets more enraging by the minute. now we find out that hired contract soldiers were overseeing the interrogations, not u.s. military. these people are not subject to military review and as such are getting away with these kinds of unthinkable actions. and then kos nails it down to rights about why this is so devastating. it doesn't matter that the vast majority of u.s. soldiers over there are good people and didn't choose to be there. they're trying to do their best to make a bad situation better. they are genuinely concerned with the implementation of democracy in iraq. but mercenaries over there are making it so that no iraqi can be faulted for being distrustful of u.s. military. why should they trust us if there are things happening there that are just as bad as when saddam was still in power? the whole situation is maddeningly upsetting and distressful. we're slowly losing the battle for the hearts and minds of the iraqi people. and no one is going to be the better for it.
