"reckless falsehoods" by andy lamey, the lead article in the most recent (may) issue of the believer, is an absolute must read for would-be journalists/media cynics/political junkies. lamey does a bang up job explaining why hacks like jayson blair and stephen glass were really small fish in the greater, ongoing debacle that is misleading journalism. blair and glass, lamey argues, were really insignificant in that their impact was relatively small. who did they really hurt? at most, a dozen or so individuals who were directly lied about in the pages of the new york times and the new republic (TNR). meanwhile, he presents to us elizabeth mccaughey, another reporter for TNR who almost single handedly was responsible for destroying the clinton health care reform bill in 1994 through an article that, while seeming to quote directly from the clinton bill, did no such thing and painted the face of the bill for the entire nation. other newspapers and magazines ran with mccaughey's ideas about the bill and she eventually, after the defeat of the bill in congress, was awarded an award for best journalism in the public interest. mccaughey's main point in the article was that the clinton bill would force all citizens into a government run HMO that would prevent them from paying cash to a doctor for an individual service; they would have to go to the government doctors that were available to them. this was an out and out non-truth, yet she was never questioned on it until after she was given the award. even then it was only through another article written for (surprise!) the new republic. since then, she has served as lieutenant governor of new york as well as becoming a fellow at the hudson institute. but where is the responsibility? clinton's bill would have provided the first inkling of a universal health care system and would have covered the millions of americans who live daily without health care. mccaughey's lies about the bill have left us to this day, nearly a decade later, in the same health care perdicament that we were in then. the united states spends nearly twice as much as any other country on health care each year, yet millions go without access to health care outisde of the emergency room. how many other articles like this go unchecked and unquestioned each year? too many to want to think about. - in the good news department, michael moore's new documentary, fahrenheit 9/11 won the palme d'or award for best overall film at the cannes film festival. moore's hopes are to have the film out in american theatres by august, in time for it to actually get its views out to the public before the november election. and these guys are doing some great stuff. maybe the critical mass group here in greensboro would be interested in donning these shirts when they hit the road next? anyone out there a member of critical mass in greensboro? leave me a comment if you are. posted by J.
